I think that it is a solid AU with rub on the high points. The rest of the surfaces look original IMHO. I do not know this series well. I do know that this is one of the best foreign large penny's that I have run across. It is my understanding that this coin type is common. Are they common in high grade?

I would have said gEF myself, though I'm not overly familiar with British pennies either.
The obverse is a little hard to figure though. In that photo I can't make out the details in the hair very well, so to me it could be anywhere between VF and aUNC.

Yeah, I'd say gEF. The hair looks slightly worn, but there's still a lot of detail there. I'm not sure what an uncirculated example should look like but I don't think this one has seen much circulation.

Maximum of EF and a few battle scars.
I have sold better for a couple of quid on ebay.
