Hello All-

As I really don't know squat about these coins. I usually collect in this fashion, based on ruler and an appealing price. I call upon the modern collectors to chime in- I do collect coins of Elizabeth I Tudor, when I bought a couple coins from one seller, this was among them. I was wondering if anyone can give me better attribution information, an idea on the value and grade for this piece. It is what appears to be a coin of Elizabeth I Tudor's successor King James I c. 1603-1625 AD. The coin appears to be in rough shape, but both obverse and reverse image in still quite appealing. Any and all comments would be appreciated. The coin also appears to be a relatively recent excavation, when I received the coin about a year ago, I had to carefully brish some of the dirt off.

I believe your coin could be s sixpence of James I. See this link. Although the example is also well-worn it has several similarities:-

Yes I believe you are right it is a 6 pence. Any idea on value in this condition, it seems a bit better then the one listed on wildwinds. I appreciate the info. Any additional suggestions or observation would be much appreciated! I think the coins are very similar with the legend reading IACOBVS DG MAG BRIT FRA ET HI REX, / TVEATVR UNITA DEVS. OR James (Jacob) regent of Britain, France and Ireland / Tudor? United by God? Not sure if I have the legend right but it smells good to me at least...

A little additional research has brought up these two links. One provides more information on the coin itself - the other gives you an idea of its value.

Great aiglet ! Thanks for the sources. I think its similar to type I First Issue 85 pounds is a lot more then I expected. Do you or anyone else know if I should try and soak it in acetone in order to rid it of what appears to be copper/ bronze deposit in the 7 o'clock position? Should I leave it?

You are very welcome! I have no experience of cleaning methods so I will leave that question for another member to answer.
