Have to agree that laying hens would be REAL valuable in any SHTF scenario wherein there are survivors. Rabbits are often over-looked as valuable meat animals as well. They breed like, well, rabbits, mature quickly, and can get fat on grass and clover. Add a nice big garden spot to that and having enough food will be much less of a problem.

"Mal de caribou?" Good grief! So now eating lean meats will ultimately be the death of me, too...
That settles it! I'm moving back to Ushuaia and going back onto Dr. Vinny Goombatz's Penguin Fat Diet.

Not that I live amongst hillbillys, but barbeque loose-meat raccoon is becoming huge at superbowl parties the last few years.

Gold at $1700 and $20 gold commons at $2100-2500. Gold at $2200 and $20 gold commons at what? $3000-$3500. Who will be able to afford to buy those coins? Gold at $5000 and $20 gold commons at $6000-7000? I bet those guys that were buying $20 coins for $300 in the 2001 Heritage Auctions have their fingers crossed.

Quote: Rabbit starvation, also referred to as protein poisoning or mal de caribou, is a form of acute malnutrition caused by excess consumption of any lean meat (e.g., rabbit) coupled with a lack of other sources of nutrients usually in combination with other stressors, such as severe cold or dry environment. Well, T, ANYTHING can be over done, even eating. You did note that in my previous message, I did mention having chickens AND a garden, right? Also, note the words "excess consumption" and "coupled with a lack of other sources of nutrients". So, what you suggest is possible under extreme situations where one is living only on LOTS of rabbit meat but that will not be the case here. The biggest obstacle to eating rabbit, which I did a lot of as a kid, is that too many people consider them too "cute and fuzzy" to eat. They are, in fact, delicious. Rabbit stew is one of my favs. I have to admit, though, that rabbit meat is much more widely accepted in Europe than it is here in the US: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...C0QFjAA&url=http://www.coniglionline.com/documenti/cod5_Production_and_world_market.pdf&ei=2JGqUN6MGIPniwKL0oGYBg&usg=AFQjCNFXyFwFNFyddR-C3hh6GMzv3qZdHg

I had a pet rabbit as a kid and have a general rule I wont eat things I had as a pet unless doomsday of course. Now if I had a gator farm that would be good eats

Yeah, one must separate pets from food, for sure. We had a pig once when I was a kid. I took care of it and then came the day that Dad decided that it was time for piggy to go into the freezer. He did the butchering and I helped but I could not do the killing or even watch when it happened. Darned good eating, though.

Something about pork though. Squeals like a human baby, parts looks and feels like humans (so much so that surgeons in training practice on pigs and its organs like heart valves and skin can be grafted on humans), and according to cannibal tribes, tastes not too far off from human.

Most amusing thread. Reading all the thoughts put down, I think I'd take a different track in A SHTF scenario. In East Africa before modern currencies were accepted A variety of goods were accepted as money, salt, lengths of cloth, beads, Measures of grain and notably rifle cartridges. If civilization collapsed there would be those who would feel the need to defend themselves.....and those who would want to hunt. My approach would be to have the necessary reloading equipment and the means to produce a suitable propellant....and create a Post SHTF mint....A rifle cartridge reloading center. Even the bad guys would appreciate the need to support such an enterprise!!

Quote: A rifle cartridge reloading center. Even the bad guys would appreciate the need to support such an enterprise!! Indeed so. What they might not appreciate, though, is you arming up their opponents. Using ammo as a trade item in a SHTF scenario would be dicey at best. Under those conditions, it is entirely possible that some people would be sufficiently desperate to try taking ALL of your stuff and using your own reloaded ammo to do it.

i JUST voted lol I hope late votes are accepted lol
YES I would buy physical gold at 2,200 oz. before I stopped collecting as the price was rising I was picking up proof gold from the US Mint.... I just did it to keep my collection of proofs up from the US mint of gold and silver... except that year were we had no proof silver Eagle bummer...
as far as GLD and futures, I would also buy gold as soon it makes a new yearly high. I like to buy high to sell higher, it works for me frequently. In fact I would LOVE to see gold at these all time highs again because it will go higher, there is no distribution and no supply of gold at these prices so there will be buyers to bring it up higher. Same thing with silver.
so yes, I will ALWAYS buy proof silver and gold, period no matter what the price is.
