Hello all...I am new here. I just introduced myself in the WELCOME section. My name is Al, I am from Florida. I am just getting back into the hobby after a 40 year break! I am also a drummer and vintage drum and cymbal collector so I'd love to here from any coin brothers and sisters who are also musicians and instrument collectors as well! I already have a question: Here is a photo of a 1970 S Lincoln from an uncirculated bank roll. What happened to this coin? Is there a name for such an error? The area in blue (the field) has a discolored mottled appearance almost like an oil slick on water. The black arrows show a "smashing" to the detail areas. I have other coins from the same roll that are even more severe but the area is the same on each as if each coin was struck in place. The entire roll is like this coin but the "error" goes from minute to full blown as you go through the coins. The one I am showing here is early to early mid in the "sequence" of severity. I am the first one to ever open this unc bank roll. When I get the time, I want to photo them in sequence in a slide slow. I think it would be cool to watch the slide show as the error starts and gets worse and worse. Have you guys ever seen this type of thing before? If so what is it called? What did it? and of course Id love to know what would each coin be worth? and what would the whole "sequence" of coins be worth as a set? thanks guys! This has nothing to do with Die Deterioration. Die Deterioration was uncommon among 1970S cents and predominantly shows along the outer edge of the devices near the outer edge of the design. Way too many posts here lay every tiny oddity off to Die Deterioration, and this is not correct - please learn the difference and give the generic ' Die Deterioration' responses a break. This coin was not heavily struck and did not strike up completely in the reverse die (which was a very deep design in 1970), which is part of why the devices are weak. Secondly, the coin could have some minor grease obstruction, which would answer for the rest of the reason why the devices are weak and the fields are mottled. It is not an error and is a very, very common occurrence. |

Thanks guys, for the info and the welcomes. IActually it may be a 1970D...I have unc rolls of D's and S's and need to make sure which this was. No one commented on the rarity or "coolness" factor of having the whole roll showing increasing degrees of the "event". Is it often that we have successive coins showing a "movie" of an "error" for lack of a better word. If it is common I wont waste the time to photo each one and put them in sequence in a slide show...I can use that time to check for new errors :)

Here is a photo without my graffitti. (I told ya I'm new) Its not the same photo though , I forgot to save the original pic of the file with the graffitti before I drew on it...this pic here is not as sharp but was taken at the same time...I would love more info and thoughts on this coin and the concurring sisters to it. Based on what I see, I concur with coppercoins that what you have is a roll of weakly struck coins. The areas of STATES and E PLURIBUS UNUM are directly opposite the point of highest relief- the shoulder and base of the bust- and can be found weakly struck on many Lincolns. Less common is the weakness of the Memorial that is opposite the rest of the bust, notice that almost everything on the periphery has a normal strike. The strike is not nearly weak enough to qualify as an error(die adjustment strike) so basically, you have a roll of coins that were poorly struck but make sure to at least check them for 70-S Small Dates!
