Hey guys... I have been following this forum for a while but just signed up. Glad to be a part of the community!
I was just wondering how you guys go about getting your rolls of coins from the bank to sift through for some collectables. Do you simply go up to a teller and ask for 20 rolls of pennies/nickels/dimes etc?

Just ask for change. Don't over think it. If you want a full box ask for 50 rolls of one denomination. |

to the Community! Yes, just ask. If they say no, do not make a fuss because a lot of banks are getting away from these types of transactions. Just try another branch or bank. |

If you like going through pennies, just ask for a box. 25 bucks and really doesn't cost that much, just what you decide to keep out of it and the rest goes back.

A word of caution. Some times when getting a box you can get skunked ie. somebody has already gone through the rolls or, the rolls are all new with the same year and mint mark. Living in a small town I know there are others looking. One box had half the rolls with cents all facing the same way. Talk about methodical. I now only get Fed wrapped boxes with older coins only. Enjoy the hunt.

I just go in and ask for a box, sometimes you'll get a strange look from the tellers but don't worry about it. It also helps if it's a bank you have an account at.
Once they get to know you, start sharing your finds with them. If you get them involved they might start setting aside older coins for you.

I go to several banks around the area and buy coin. Some will require you to have an acct, but the majority do not. However, selling them back to the bank can be hairy if you don't have an acct.

what works for me is I go to a bank I have an account with and just go in and ask for say 25$ in pennies I never say rolls or anything like that just how much of a certain denomination I want...sometimes a teller may ask what its for and depending on what I'm getting I just make up some story on why I need them...for work, for my job, for poker tonight with the guys, do some research, have to pay off a bet I owe to a guy and I want to make him mad by giving him it all in pennies...anything like that I dont usually like saying I collect coins because I've actually been turned down by some tellers saying oh no we dont give those away like that because they know I'm gona go dump them back at their other branch locations (which I never would do anyways as I have a dump bank.....hope this helps ya out a little bit...always a little nerve racking the first couple of times at least for me haha but then after awhile the tellers know you and you get comfortable at....but never go to the same bank branch during the same week they will get mad at you for taking all their change...u might be able to work out a deal with them for them to order a box or 2 of something every week if you get in with them happy hunting  |

I used to just go in and ask for say $25 in pennies or $100 in nickels, etc. This worked for the most part until some banks wanted to charge. I was maybe getting $500 in face over an entire year, so not that much..
Recently I have had great success in asking a bank to order boxes for me. This if going very well and they know what I am doing with the coins, so there are no weird looks. I would recommend to do this is you can. $25 in pennies is a lot for some banks. You may need to order that much.

bpoc1 - How do I go about getting Fed wrapped boxes with older coins only? - Do I ask the bank for this? Any clarification or how to do it is helpful to a beginner like me, I live in New England and what was once a small town is no more so I'm SURE people have been going through rolls long before me and your method is exactly to the tee what I want to try.

Here is what I say now when asked what all the "pennies" are for. I tell them my son is getting into coins, and he always asks me to bring rolls home to look through. Until recently this would have been an untruth but he has been showing a little interest in coins of late. And when they ask how old he is, and I tell them he's nine (which he is) they smile and think that's the greatest thing! I have a number of branches holding interesting coins for him now. An occasional $5 Starbucks card to the teller you go to the most doesn't hurt, either.
