I was just wandering around people's on-line coin catalogs when I saw this coin and it took my breadth away. I have never seen a better Roman coin. To be clear, it is not my coin, but I had to share it with everyone here. ROMAN EMPIRE, Carausius, Diocletian & Maximianus - Antoninianus Obv.: CARAVSIVS ET FRATRES SVI, jugate, radiate & cuirassed busts of Maximianus, Diocletian & Carausius left Rev.:PAX A-VGGG, Pax standing left, holding olive-branch & vertical scepter; S P/C. Mint Camulodunum. (Struck circa 292-293 AD) I read that the owner paid 25K plus fees in order to own this coin. Wow!

I know this coin and have come across it before on FAC, its a beauty. 25K is a lot of cash though I'll add one too: Diocletian AR Argenteus. Nicomedia, 295 AD. DIOCLETIANVS AVG, laureate bust right VICTORIAE SARMATICAE, four turreted camp-gate, open, with doors thrown back; SMNG in exergue. RIC 25a. 3.37g, 20mm, 12h. Very Rare â€" R3. Fleur De Coin. Struck on a remarkably broad flan of medallic quality. Up for auction (I think ) estimated at £1000 if anyone is feeling rich: http://www.coinarchives.com/a/resul...diocletianvs

Beautiful coins. Does the coin I posted remind you of anything a little more modern?

. Another beauty. I can only dream of owning such coins. Does the coin I posted remind anyone of the triple portraits of Marx, Engels and Lenin (someone else pointed this out)?

Quote: This coin was resold in february of this year for almost 60k Wow, been a lot of crazy prices recently - prices that rise this quick can tumble at similar speeds, hope its ended up in a museum somewhere where lots of people can enjoy it. Quote: Beautiful coins. Does the coin I posted remind you of anything a little more modern? Only this monstrosity

While I would love to have the triple portrait, it might be pushing matters a bit to call it a Roman coin. I'll go for wannabe Roman coin but the issues of Carausius were for his realms in the North and he was never recognized as Emperor by the two Romans he added to his coin in an attempt to get that recognition. My nominee for Best Jugate Roman or at least the specific coin I'd most like to own is the aureus of Nero and his mother with elephant reverse that was found in the Boscoreale Hoard. Several exist that are nicer but I want the red toned one from Boscoreale. Somehow I doubt the ANS will be giving it up. http://www.acsearch.info/search.htm...=&c=&a=&l=#1http://ansmagazine.com/Summer04/Boscoreale

The owner of the Agrippina sestertius I've posted have a website showing his collection, mainly "modern" British coins, but his "few" Romans are worth a look http://www.petitioncrown.com/

I agree that Carausius coin is very nice. I saw that very same coin awhile back and decided to look around for a lower grade coin of the same type. Not a chance! lol

Ive always wanted a Carausius - its next on my trade list. I love this coin - well, the obverse. Its history is very key to Britain. I dont much care for the reverse! And the Nero et Agrippina coin - I studied the Annals of Rome a while ago and did a lot on those two - this coin is a very key thing. EDIT: wow, now heres a coin. Hadrian addressing his legions in Britain, who were tasked with keeping the barbarians north of the wall away. While it might not be working as well now, this is still a great coin:

Great story ...and fantastic that the owner allows it to be exhibited at the BM, this type of coin does not deserve to be hid away with just a few sets of eyes getting to see it
