Third Party Grader In Australia

There are Some dealers out there that sell coins and grade them that are absolutely "Spot on", However there are heaps of dealers that quite simply "wouldn't have a clue" that grade and sell coins.

If we can't get an Australian only TPG started can we at least get a database of the dealers that DO know their stuff and sell coins graded constantly and accurately started ?

IMHO getting a coin slabbed is ALL about value adding and has little to do with collecting.

PCGS and NGC have a strangle hold on this market in Aus at the moment and I personally would love to see an honest and accurate TPG started in Aus
I really don't give a hoot if they sell coins as well as long as they are consistent and accurate in their grades it really makes NO difference.

If the graders name is on the slab instead of an anonymous company that you haven't a clue who did the grading would be a great start as well

hi fellas I am returning to coin collecting after 20 years. but now I live in australia. sohave lots to learn. I am surprised that australia doesn't have a more established coin TPG. believe it or not I made $30 on some coins I found in hard rubbish. sn adelaide dealer bought them. I have noticed a huge variation on the price scale for the same coins. who has the most reliable price guide. or is ebay a good way to see prices and then average them.

thanks robster. I have many questions and little time (4young kids) so will look through the forums for more info. I am thinking about building a key date low mintage early americana collection. but might consider other options. I am just ignorant about aussie coins but have a pretty good brain for statistical coin mumbo jumbo. that would bore my wife stupid. just for fun whats your dream coin(s) mine are thr 1909 s vdb Wheat penny. and the 1916 d Mercury dime.
I've wasted tons of $ on women and beer I could have bought dozens of them. haha

I promised myself that I wouldn't enter into this discussion again But here goes.
First of all at the moment we don't have anyone with the all the key ingredients Gumption,knowlage or the financial wherewithal to do this in Aus at the moment
We DO however have some outstanding people that sell coins and the only way to tell is by the handwriting on the 2x2's, That is good enough for me .
Them there is the fact that the major TPG's that are based in the US are quite frankly bloody useless at grading Australian coins, IMHO they are clueless when it comes to Aussie coins.
They don't even consider that the coins in a wedding set are in fact specimen coins when in fact they are produced to make that specification
Getting a high grade coin slobbed IS a great way of value adding when it comes time to sell, But getting them graded by people that are only really used to grading US coins and spending X amount of dollars in postage and grading fees just to get back a coin in a flash plastic case with a grade you "Just know" is wrong is stupid.
The dealers in Aus are "Embracing" this slobbed concept because they can turn an ordinary coin into something extraordinary simply by getting them graded by some unknown, untraceable and sometimes inept grader and getting the coin entombed in plastic.
Give me a break, the coin is what it is and the plastic doesn't change a bloody thing as far as I am concerned.
The way things are going we may have EFT's on coins next.
