I'm cool with whatever on time...i have missed voting before on those short turn arounds.

jw:i hope everything goes well this week and you and your wife get some good news!

strange how things like that impacted the coin hobby for me. when the health of someone in my family was in question the coins just became these little round pieces of metal I couldn't care less about. but sometimes, when there's was some down time and I would think about stuff and go a tad crazy, and there wasn't anything else I could do... then i'd break out some dirty coins and clean like crazy, or have some beers and go ebay coin shopping, or start arranging my coins, or whatever...kind of helped keep me sane.

anyway...i wish you and you family the best.

speaking of beer and coins....it's going to be an ebay coin night....should be interesting!

augustus1 => hopefully you're correct ... hopefully your tactic will lure-in some unsuspecting newbies to our hobby (I have noticed quite a few new faces sniffing around the ol' ancient section lately)

I like the longer turn-around, having not bought anything for a while I'm trying (and failing) to pick up a bargain so I can enter it.

JW, my fingers are crossed mate.

Here is the sort of entry I was hoping to promote with the new rules extending the time for this Smackdown:

Smackdown-XXII,-Value-For-Money

It is a Helena (mother of Constantine) from Siscia. It was bought today on ebay for $26, postage included. Needless, to say I don't have it yet. This coin is not eligible because I am the host.

Just bought this one...

One for the specialist eastern Severan collector...

Septimius Severus Denarius
Obv:- L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII, laureate head right
Rev:- LIERTA (sic) AVG, Liberalitas standing left, holding abacus in right hand, cornucopiae in left
RIC -. BMCRE -. RSC -.

Smackdown-XXII,-Value-For-Money

This odd error missing the B of LIBERTA not listed in major references. I don't have the LIBERTA version either.

Bought on German ebay for < US $45 in last couple of days. Not in hand yet.

Out of my two most recent good deals, even though more people on here would be familiar with my Magnus Maximus, I personally feel that I got a better deal on my Umayyad Fals, so that's the other coin that I will post (not that I think I didn't pay a good price for my Mag Maximus).

Umayyad Fals, Tabariya mint, 697-740 AD

$13.50 on Oct 21

My second entry.....

Philip II Antoninianus from Antioch

Obv:- IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, Radiate bust right, seen from the front
Rev:- AEQVITAS AVGG, Aequitas standing left holding scales and cornucopia
Minted in Antioch
RIC 240(a)var. RSC 1 var. Bland 64.

This is a scarce variety with a front facing bust rather then the much more common bust seen from the rear.

Bought on ebay this week for $55.00 all in.

If you buy a coin today or tomorrow you can still enter it. Anyone who has not ever entered a coin in a Smackdown gets 6 bonus points. Is no one buying coins these days?
