I am considering a monster box of ASE from APMEX. They advertise a sealed box with, Quote: First Strike eligible Silver Eagle Coins appeal to collectors There is a $5.50 per coin premium. So my question, if anyone has bought an advertised box of first strike eligible ASE, is it worth the premium?

Unless you are planning to spend the money to send each and every one in to be graded, who cares about "First Strike eligible"? You can get a "regular" monster box for $3.49 per coin over spot at APMEX (and less elsewhere, like Goldmart).

I agree, unless you plan to grade a lot of them, it won't be worth it. You might as well get the Monster Box with the Mystery date on it, at least it'll be a surprise when it shows up. JK. Don't get that box, it's just funny how they have a mystery date box. I wonder if you can just send in the whole box to a TPG, which a heavy check. :P

Quote:I wonder if you can just send in the whole box to a TPG, which a heavy check. :P You can, thats how the websites do it. You can specify not to have coins graded below a certain grade too but you cant pick 70 for the grade. But I agree if you arent getting them graded to resell its useless. The companies that would buy a box like that to do it have already gotten what they wanted so your resale market will be pretty much non existent

Yes there is no way I would go 5 per coin verses 3 or less. After the cost of PCGS, little chance there is enough gems to put you back in the black....

Not to mention the time and effort to make all the sales necessary if you did

If I do decide to purchase a box, would it be worth more if I did not open it and left it as is? Also, how would you store the monster? I doubt that it would be hermetically sealed.

Honestly I dont think it would be worth anymore unopened, maybe after a while. Youre potential buyer base for such a large purchase will be really small and you will have to compete against the same people youre buying it from for resale so without a change in silver price youll be losing money. Selling it individually would be your best bet to make some money off it

Unopened monster boxes usually bring a 1%-2% premium from major buyers.

Roller arent those generally the same places youd be buying it from though?

Yes, indeed they are the same, but if you are stepping up to play on the monster box level...you will more than likely be selling to them as well, especially if you keep it sealed. There aren't a lot of players out there who buy regularly on that volume and ebay's fees are just too high.

I agree with that. I cant imagine how many listings that could take to sell on ebay. For that kind of money you would probably be better off assembling full ASE sets and selling them with the premium for the complete album. Otherwise pray silver goes up a good amount lol

At the sealed box level...surprisingly the differential between the buy price FROM the big sellers and the sell TO price aren't that much on the monster box level and freight ceases to be a big factor. If you are wanting to play with true investment grade physical silver, monster boxes to the big players is a legit path to take.

True thats also when you get into the being in it for the long haul. Quick flips and monster boxes dont go hand in hand to take advantage of a spike

If you go the "1st strike" and graded route, you're going to be laying out some truly (and I think unnecessarily) long bucks and your return will be subject to market conditions and fluctuations. You might end up a big winner, and on the other hand it might be quite some time before you broke even. This kind of action plan isn't a guaranteed roadmap to high-speed, major financial gain. If I bought a box, I'd buy a current year box at the lowest premium/shipping I could find and do everything I could to keep the deal to a simple, uncomplicated silver investment. Whatever you end up doing -- good luck with it...

Actually...if you think of a monster box as a single 500oz bar...it is actually easier and MORE profitable to flip than smaller quantities are. There is a diminishing cost of "doing business" as you increase the volume sold. Shipping costs per ounce is lower, handling costs are lower, etc... this then by default maximizes profit, not to mention a smaller difference between buy and sell premiums because of the volume discount. Big buyers, even though they give you a volume discount when you buy, do not equally penalize you for volume selling. In the practical sense...which may feel and sound contradictory... small volumes are better for the long haul, large volumes are better for the quick flip.
