The following is a press release from the Perth Mint

Summer-Square-Coin-Sales-Running-Hot

Demand for the new square-shaped Summer coin is running red hot. Reaction to its launch on our website earlier this week has been amazing. It looks certain to be gone long before the arrival of Autumn!

In Australia, square-shaped pennies and halfpennies were produced between 1919 and 1921 as part of a move towards a smaller and thus more cost-effective national coinage. But the experiment failed to get off the ground.

In tribute to the Kookaburra patterns, The Perth Mint issued 1/2oz Australian Kookaburra square-shaped silver coins between 2002 and 2005. The 2002 issue was Australia's first ever legal tender square-shaped coin.

When Australia marked 50 years of television in 2006, our innovative ‘lenticular' commemorative proved popular in the shape of an old-fashioned TV featuring Graham Kennedy, Playschool, Skippy, Countdown, The Movie Show and Hey Hey.

The arrival of Summer as part of our Australian Seasons Series follows in the rare but firmly established tradition of Australian square coins.

Interesting issue.
The series could be popular and "hot".
But the printed background makes it less attractive.

To bobby131313:

why you created this post and inserted a picture? It cost me $191

Initially didn't want that kangaroo, but after thinking a while decided to get it - the first coin in the series, that promise to be nice parallel to my Coloured Maple Leaf seasons series - from Talisman (was unavailable at Perth Mint), later on the evening changed my mind, and today morning, when saw that it again available on the Perth Mint website + shipping free to Canada on order $99 or more - bought it.
In addition took 2010 Platypus (1 oz Silver) - to the Dingo and Wombat that I have.

I thought it is only me who can't resist this simple design on the coloured background. And the free shipping was the last argument.

But anyway - congratulation!!

I will continue the series, just worry that the other coins will be again same kangaroo on the different background

My biggest worry is I have to start paying shipping for the future coins in this series.

But honestly, I normally avoid coloured coins by the Perth Mint. My biggest dislike is the lack of engraving beneath the painted surface. IMO, printing a picture (no matter how beautiful) on a smooth surface does not count as craftsmanship anymore with today's technology. But the kangaroo on this coin looks quite nice, and the colour is on the field (instead of on the relief like many other coins), that made me want one. Free shipping is a big plus too.

Agree with every word about printed picture (background).

That's the reason that previously I bought only couple of Perth Mint coloured coins - all related to the series, where only small piece of background colored, and the iconic Australian animal are silver-crafted.

I received mine today along with the second coin in the bird series. I had to pay taxes (FedEx)... has anyone else been charged ordering directly from the Perth Mint?

I have ordered Aus coins from US dealers (USPS shipping) and not once have I had to pay any sorts of taxes.

I haven't received mine yet, will post again when I got it.
Besides tax, did they charge you any handling fee?

@Silveroid: if you go back to the perth min web site and look at the picture for the summer coin again. click on the one with the box and use the "magnify" glass or zoom in feature, you will see that each season have different animal. I think autumn is Wombat?, Winter is a toad? and Spring is a ship?

My regret is not ordering more of these instead of the three headed dragon

Looks more like a Possum or Sugar-Glider for Autumn.
Maybe a Lizard for Winter, which is strange, because
I thought they hibernated in winter.
Spring appears to be a White Cockatoo.

@ksimms3: Interesting, my order just got dispatched, and it is being sent by EMS (Australia Post) instead of Fedex, not sure why. But happy with the speedy dispatch.

Also got mail about order dispatching.
This is my 4-th order from Perth Mint, and it always was by EMS.
No additional chargers were required.

To Lostwords:
Thanks a lot for pointing.
If I seen initially these pictures, directly would order a coin, without thinking 2 days.

Congrats!

Nice picture...

One of the good things with the Perth Mint from my experience - order may take couple of weeks to arrive, but no delays.

And this series - four of these coins together will look just awesome.
