For my next coin I want to add an ancient coin with incuse square reverse... I have been looking on Vcoins and nothing really jumped out at me... The thrace saytr carring nymph design is cool (I notice as a stater its big bucks but drachms are far more affordable) Turtles are huge money, though I saw a tempting coin on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/very-nice-A...em337db38220 I wonder what this is likely to fetch... its a super looking coin but I will pass as I dont want to spend much money this side of christmas. Really I cant make up my mind what I will go after... thrace cheronessus forepart of lion coins seem an obvious candidate but I just dont like tiny coins much. I am looking for something with some guts to it which I can pick up something with eye appeal relatively cheaply... Any suggestions of coins I should be searching?

Chersonesos hemidrachms can be very nice, even if they are not the size of a tetra... Turtles are a classic, and the one your following on ebay is really not that bad (with a well centered, almost complete beast). The deposits might detract some bidders, so you have a chance it does not skyrocket I'd say.

There are no large, cheap coins with incuse reverses. Incuse squares are early and silver was expensive then so most you see will be smaller or very low grade if not expensive. A low grade turtle may be the best answer. They are not expensive if missing the head or very worn. I'll guess $300 for this one brought down by the brown crust.

I look forwards to seeing them :)
As I mentioned a few months back I bought a package of Ebooks containing many books on ancient coinage...these are not great as reference books but as a collection of essays and observations they do contain some interesting information.
These books are mainly turn of the century...and mention that you can easily pick up turtle coins for five shillings or less in nice condition.
I am always interested in seeing photo's of nice coins, I can browse Vcoins for many hours but I am looking for that coin that jumps out at me and says "BUY ME!" a well centred good example which doesn't cost the earth... and for these archaic coins it seems that I have champagne taste and beer money as always.
The turtles I think for one I like its going to be too much (I am expecting the example I pointed out from the bay to at least double before ending)
The Chersonesos coins maybe I will buy one when I see a particularly fine example.
The Saytr carrying nymph coins the staters are above my price range often going into 4 figures... the drachms can be bought reasonably but I havent seen a good enough example yet for under 100-150 pounds.
I noticed perian coins which all tend to be very mis-shapen (almost rectangular) that look like they are very heavy with a deep incuse pattern on one side and the king running with a spear and holding a bow on the other side... they are quite appealing.
Other than those nothing is really jumping out... which is why I thought I would start a thread so you guys and girls can show off your favourites of this type.

Been looking for a nice turtle for a long time and I finally got the following not so long ago (love it ) for about 275$ Patience is the key. Don't search for a coin you want to buy immediately, wait for the coin to find you

Yeah it does seem to be the same coin... The test cuts and deposits dont really bother me, I like the turtle side (the legs seem a little different to your coin, I prefer the turtle on the ebay coin) though I like that on your coin the incuse side is better centered and the flan on yours is perfect. At $300-350 I would agree its a decent deal but I dont want to spend that much before christmas since next month I am away and will require spending money and also I wont be working (I dont get holiday pay) so any major coin purchases will have to be after Christmas... I still want you guys to show off your coins :P I cant believe that there is such a limited variety of incuse coins; surely aside from the 4 types of coin mentioned so far there must be others I should be looking at?

Great coins--I especially like the lion on the Chersonesos hemidrachm.

The Byzantion I have almost been tempted by a couple (maybe they werent tetra's maybe they were drachms) around the £100 mark there are a few reasonably appealing coins...its a possible to keep my eyes open if I find the right one I will want it. I have noticed that many of them the punch in the back is worn till it looks like a windmill (or it was just not struck deeply) the particular one posted looks like it is much chunkier and thicker than those I have looked at...it has a more archaic style about it which I like.
The Acanthus tetrobol is a new one to me (similar obverse to some Parion Mysia coins if I spelt that right) I am not sure I like it particularly though.

Those you're referring to, from Byzantion, are the smaller modules (drachm (4-5 g) or fractions). The one I've posted is indeed a fat one at about 15 g
