Silveroid, If you're not sure, then don't.
My reasons for getting one are not entirely logical from an investment view. For me, I just feel that it will be kind of cool to have a coin from this recently availed hoard.
And it'll be nice to look at.
I generally prefer silver coins, because they tend to be larger :) (And more within my budget)

Well I pulled the trigger on a 1914 $5 coin. Puts me in MC status and no tax to the USA. Merry Christmas to me!

Key "numbers" info from the RCM press release: Approximately 245,000 King George V $5 and $10 gold coins dated 1912, 1913 or 1914 are currently held in the Exchange Fund Account (EFA), controlled by the Minister of Finance. To liquidate these physical assets and convert them into high credit quality, marketable fixed income securities, 30,000 of these coins were hand-selected for sale as high-quality treasures of Canada's numismatic past. The remaining coins bearing imperfections from handling or environmental conditions will be melted and refined into pure gold by the Mint, which will convert them into a tradable, liquid asset.
The following coins are being made available to the public:
Premium Hand-Selected 6-Coin Set (140 sets - $12,000 each) Premium Hand-Selected 1912, 1913 and 1914 $5 single gold coins (291 coins - $875 each) Premium Hand-Selected 1913 and 1914 $10 single gold coins (4,869 coins - $1,750 each) Hand-Selected 1912, 1913 and 1914 $5 single gold coins (5,050 coins - $500 each) Hand-Selected 1912, 1913 and 1914 $10 single gold coins (18,950 coins - $1,000 each) These exclusive collectibles are being offered in Premium Hand-Selected and Hand-Selected categories to provide flexible pricing options while delivering the high product quality our customers expect. So, of the individual coins available, the Premium $5.00 coins are - by far - the least available coins from this Bank of Canada hoard. In speaking with a rep at the RCM, the coins are selling quickly. My guess is that the Premium $5.00 coins will be gone today.

Quote:I feel we shouldn't compare these coins to bullion. what's the price of NCLT quarter oz gold coin from RCM? for example the snake, 688+tax The snake is a proof coin. If you buy the premium 1912-194 coin, it's is 875 plus tax for a possibly near uncirculated coin. The decision to make seems to be is the age of the coin worth the additional premium. That seems to be a personal choice. Excellent info Commems. Thanks

Oh, wait, RCM said the coins are "sealed for more than 75 years in the vaults at the Bank of Canada", that means these coins may be already circulated NOT fresh coins from RMC directly to the vault.

30,000 coins.... well, with those kind of numbers, they'll always be a bullion coin... This means everyone can have a mint state 1914 $5 gold coin (what used to be the scarcer date of the short series)...

So based on today's gold prices the $5 coin contains $376 worth of gold.
So with shipping and taxes the most affordable of these new release old gold coins is +/- $200 over spot price.

Premium $5 sold out.
Said 15 minutes. I waited 45. And they sold out while I was on hold.
