Since I am doing a light and optics unit in school, I decided to make a photography setup. Here's the setup I made: Best Picture after Cropping: After Editing: I'm using a T2i and two Jansjo lights. Any advice to make the pictures better? Thanks

Regardless of which lens that is - looks like the 18-55 - you are too close to the coin for it to focus properly. When I played with that combination, I had to set the front of the lens 18" or so from the coin, and zoomed in to about 50mm. Even at 18mm, the lens would not focus much less than 12" from the subject.

I use a tube extension and a 50mm lens. Also it helps to make sure that the camera and platform are level. Try manual focus and a remote actuator will help. Skyfall was awesome!

Are you aware that camera comes with a software package which, with the addition of the included USB cable, will allow you to run the whole process from your computer?

Yes I am aware of that... but the cable I am using to power the two lamps only has two power ports and my laptop is nearly out of power... charging from another port that starts at the same spot

SsuperDdave mentioned in another post that with Jansjo lights the tungsten setting is the closest to the light color as far as a factory setting on the Canon EOS cameras. I tried it and it does a very good job so maybe you can try that to remove the red tint in your photographs. I am not sure if you are pointing straight down at the coin (But I know it makes a huge difference with focus as mine was off) but you can put a mirror down where the coin is going to be sitting and you should be able to look through the view finder and see the lens in the mirror, if you do not you need to adjust the camera until you do, if you do not do this your coins will never be in focus correctly. This is just a couple things that I had help with when I was trying to learn how to take coin shots with my T1i which is close enough to the same camera you have to work for you as well. The only difference is I use a 100MM lens instead of the kit lens you have, but did use the same lens when I first got the camera.

I notice my auto focus does not work well with coins. I let it auto focus then use the depth to get a better focus. I took this photo for the website background
