I am new to collecting and a friend asked if I wanted to buy a postal commemorative society, 25 coin silver eagles dollars containing one ounce of silver in collector panels. They run from 1986 to 2011 and have a 24 c gold in lay on the dress. My question is are they worth more than the 33.25 silver price? I would not think there is any added value than that in the third party fluff that those ASE are in. I could be wrong, and the rest of us would have to see pictures of the item or a similar one in order to tell for sure.

Here is the pic of the gold inlay. There are 25 of these and they all seem nice under plastic and a page of facts that happened that year.

They are very nice looking pieces, but there is not enough gold there to add any value. As a matter of fact, while it IS pretty, that ruins any possible numismatic premium there might be. So yeah, melt or a buck or two more.

The Britannia has a version like this that the Mint put out and I like them but I don't know if they are worth the premium unless you just like them and will get the enjoyment of owning them as they may not appreciate in value over time. This is what the 2006 guilded Britannia's look like, there are 5 in the set but this one will pretty much show what they look like

Silver value only... gold plating and painting ruins coins.

Quote: gold plating and painting ruins coins. More specifically, coins with third-party plating and/or colorization are simply altered/damaged coins in the view of most collectors. Many world Mints issue plated/colorized coins (RCM, Britain, Perth), and their value is not harmed because the Mint itself did the plating and/or colorization.

I think the difference between the Britannia coins and the ASE's is that the Britannia's were done by the mint the ASE's were done by a private party. I know the Britannia's do sell for a premium over their all silver counterparts. There are 4 different designs for the guilded 2006 set and the set will cost about 500-600 Dollars if you can find a set someone wants to sell Edit: I see DNA had posted while I was typing this but said pretty much the same thing
