Lots of good advice here. I am new to collecting and new to the site. Have only been to one show and a few club meetings. I appreciate sjh241's advice on Large cents. I am leaning towards starting with them myself. I want to focus on early American coins, and would like to start with a type that is somewhat easy to find and can be affordable while buying VF or better grade. I will start my own new topic asking for advice for beginners. What I really need is time! Never enough of it.

All of the above has been great advice. I ALWAYS make my own determination as to what a coin grades. I would not make a habit of challenging a dealer about an over graded coin, but always check to see if you agree. If you don't agree, politely comment or move on. 10x mag. Loupe. Price guide. List of your own inventory so you can avoid buying duplicates (unless you are trying to upgrade). I always ask for a better deal. Don't seem too eager. Make a couple of rounds to see what is out there before your first purchase. If you blow all your loot on the first coin(s) you find and discover more desirable coins later, it is upsetting. Most of all, have fun and take your time!

There are plenty of common coins affordable in the VF grade like common Mercury dimes, walkers, Buffalo nickels, and Indian Heads.

1. Bring cash.
2. Do not bring a check book or credit/debit type cards.
3. Keep cash in a front pocket, not in a rear pocket or jacket pocket.
4. Do not buy the first coin you see that you like.
5. Walk around and check out what is available first.
6. Do not carry a back pack. They tend to hit people and at some shows you would be asked to leave.
7. Bring a list of what you might want.
8. Do not bother bringing a copy of the Red Book. All the prices in there are rediculous.
9. Never pay the price a dealer first mentions. Always ask what is your cheapest or best price.
10. Remember that a coin show is basically a flea market, only for coins. This means haggling a price is normal.
