Hello all again... I thought I would use the knowledge I've learnt over the last few days to have a go at identifying these four roman Denarius?(or that's what I think they are.) I'm pretty sure top right is a Gordian III; bottom right possibly Hadrian; Bottom left either Domitian or Vespasian however I'm struggling with ID'ing the rear end of the animal and finally top left I'm not too sure on. I apologize in advice as I most probably completely wrong. I'm sorry, I'm unable to provide you with anymore details other than these pictures as I got them off ebay.   |

The first one is a Fouree of Caracalla, the second is Gordian III, #3 I believe is Vespasian, and #4 is Trajan.

#3 is Titus....Has a T on down rigth.T CAESAR....

The Gordian also looks like a fouree.

The Titus is a special slightly high end type but you got the low end. It shows a sow with piglets. The type was supposed to be offensive to the Jews following the destruction of the Temple. You have the rear of the sow and part of one piglet.

Thanks for the responses, at least I got one out of the four correct. I do especially like the Titus. I payed £13 for the lot which is around £3.30 a piece which I don't think is to bad? Also, what is a fouree?

I would pay 3 pounds all day for a halved denarius of Titus! You stole these my friend.  A fouree denarius is a coin that is counterfeit. It is not modern; it was made back in ancient times when these coins were still circulating. Someone would strike a fake in bronze and then dip it in siver to make it look like the real thing. Fouree coins are collectible in their own right as a key piece of numismatic history. |

After waiting since last week for them to arrive the decent stuff is all broken! The two halves has been halved again and are all chipped and damaged. I'm soo angry at the seller as his packaging was terrible ( just a envelope...).

Oh how sad the idiots got a hold of these coins which have weathered a millennium of neglect and heavy circulation and ruined them in one fell swoop. Please tell us who the seller is so we may skip your most awful experience. I hope restitution is rapidly forthcoming. ebay has gotten to be a real serpents lair of late. I've been forced to file grievances with more sellers this past year than ever before. Each time, the seller fought me at every step, while having use of my money. Tough times bring out the scoundrels. However, I still buy from ebay regularly because the deals when found can be substantial. I still buy a lot of silver at spot or below, sometimes far below. I suppose the hassles are just a part of doing business, but dishonesty and theft really raise my hackles. |
