how much would a defective clad planchet error on a 1977 Jefferson nickel be worth? there is copper showing through the obverse ,reverse and part of the rim. there is a place on the rim where I can see the nickel peeling off the copper.

That is not possible since nickels are CuNi alloy, not clad. Not much more can be said without a picture.

No idea on the error, but those aligator clips do nasty things to coins. Just sayin...

I have a handful of the Jeffs. I've been told everything from improper mix to being splashed w/a reactive liquid. As long as the jury's out, I'll keep pullin' them, if just for the cool factor. I wonder if Mike could chime in?

If you look close to the edge you can see the nickel peeling off the copper.

That's pretty interesting. I've seen this in the past and was never sure but I thought PMD so set them free. Maybe not the best choice, huh?

The coin has suffered from enivronmental damage. As I stated earlier, the planchet is an alloy. Nickel cannot peel off the copper because it is a homogeneous mixture.

This nickel must be stamped from another planchet meant for another coin then because it is peeling.

I may be wrong, but if the nickel was on the wrong planchet then it wouldn't be the size of a nickel. Check the weight. Should be 5 grams but due to some plating loss it may hit at 4.8 or 4.9 grams.

Please do yourself a favor and lose the roach....I mean alligator clips for holding your coins.
