I've always had good luck with the post office, but they just lost a coin that was being shipped to me. It was shipped November 1st and the history shows Waynesboro to Harrisburg and then nothing. My postmaster tells me that it may be stuck in an unused bag and just magically show up when Xmas activity picks up. Now could the coin have been something common? Nope. It was an 1834 N5 that I picked up at a bargain price on ebay. Here's a link: http://cgi.ebay.com/221145012476

I feel sorry for your loss. :( When I was younger, I was supposed to have 4 SLQ's mailed to me. The prospect of having silver 90 year old coins for the first time was so exciting to me, I couldnt wait. Then It got lost and never reappeared. Post office suspected that neighbors took it, and never gave it back. Confirmed my doubts when the neighbors kid brought in the coins for show and tell.

Did you get them back? I keep checking ebay and craigslist. There's only about 150 known examples of that variety.

skool, my day was going pretty good, until I read that. The city where I live has made 2 arrests of USPS employees in just the last 90 days & I imagine it happens about everywhere, but I'm changing my shipping address.

Of coins I bought or that I won in an auction, USPS has lost 1 coin and FedEx has lost 1 coin. The USPS coin was delivered to the wrong house on the wrong route. The FedEx coin was lost in their distribution area, and they can't find it. On both coins, the company refunded my money.

I got my money back on that one, but I would much rather have the coin. I do have another 1834 N5, but this would have made a nice partner for it. Not the best condition, but rare is rare.

I used to work for FedEx so I can tell you that you would be surprised at things that happen to items being shipped. I worked for the LTL (freight) division but even with bigger stuff like this all types of strange things happen including a lot of theft. I can only imagine how it is at the carrier division where they handle millions and millions of smaller hand freight. It is amazing that as much gets to where its supposed to go as it does, but its usually the ones people really want that gets lost like this coin

That's terrible to hear that your coin is lost. But, maybe it will show up around Christmas, what a great gift that will be. I'm hoping it is recovered.

I've had this happen both to me and being sent. I totally understand your frustration. I had a Colonial lost in transit to me once...I was hot!

Wow... when I read that I was like How could a neighbor do that and then give it to their child? If I ever lost any coins in that way - especially SLQ's - I'd be upset. Those are the mixed emotions I would feel, and that's got to hurt when a neighbor brings it in for show and tell.

What a sad story and the loss of a rare coin makes it even worse. I wish you great good fortune and the coin suddenly appears.
I'm probably like most here in that I buy a lot of coins shipped by mail. I've always been lucky and not lost a shipment. I know I'd be spitting mad if it happened. Tzarmarko's story made my blood boil. Ripped off by the neighbors. How'd you keep from a heated confrontation...or did you?

Quote: There's only about 150 known examples of that variety. More like around 31 to 45 known, it's still listed as an R-5+. (Probably a little optimistic, I think R-5 but it is a TOUGH R-5 with most known pieces in lower grade and/or damaged.) I hope it eventually shows up.
