Arabic. "Turkoman bronze" Husam al Din Yuluq-Arslam, struck 596 AH = AD 1199/1200 31 mm. Spengler/Sayles 36. Mitchner 1043. Figure seated cross-legged holding sword and severed head. The interpretation of this type is controversial, with some saying is is astrological, representing Mars in Aries. But the role of the sword in severing a head is obvious. If interpreted at face value, it is a pretty bloody type! The reverse legend recognizes two Ayyubid overloads, sons of Saladin, who were rulers of Damascus and Aleppo respectively. Those cities have been in the news recently.

Numerian Antoninianus Obv:â€" IMP C NVMERIANVS AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right Rev:â€" PACATO-R ORBIS, Emperor advancing right, holding shield and sword, captive, cowering beneath Minted in Lugdunum (C in exe) Emission 9 Officina 3. Summer A.D. 284 Reference:â€" Cohen 41 (30 F). Bastien 618 (2 examples cited). RIC Unlisted. This is the only die in the entire Roman Imperial series to have this peculiar depiction of the emperor using a sword to dispatch a cowering captive. The emperor is usually seen spearing an enemy rather than using a sword. This is a scarce type though I know EdDop has a great example of the type too (that's what happens when collecting themes overlap). An old photograph which I really should get round to updating.

Great coins. I've been very busy lately so I haven't had much time to photograph and post coins. Hopefully I'll be able to get some in before the deadline.

Martin that's a beauty, typical for Lugdunum in this period.

sorry Eng5858, but the "spear" on your Carus coin is in fact a sceptre.
Regards
