I was inspired by the discussion on another thread to finally do something I've been thinking about for years. I'm finally setting my no date Buffalo nickels free and putting the little guys back in circulation.

I have around a rolls worth and I started over the last weekend. I set some rules (that can be broken at any time I feel like it) that I'm going to try to follow. The Buffalo nickels need to be used for a purchase or for a tip and ideally they make it into the change drawer unnoticed.

Here is how I've done so far:

12/8 - I gave one to our regular waitress at Chili's. I didn't think there was anyway to sneak it into the tip so I broke my rules right out of the box.

12/9 - I bought a slice of pepperoni pizza at Costco for $2.13. I paid with two singles and three nickels, I put a Buffalo nickel under two Jeffs. The cashier didn't catch on. Success!

12/9 - I bought some cough drops at a local pharmacy and dropped one in the change I used to pay for it. The cashier did a quick double take but dropped the nickels in the drawer without saying anything.

12/13 - I bought lunch at a Chinese restaurant and used two. The cashier caught it right away and said with a big smile, "Hey, these are the old type of nickels." I simply said, yeah your right.

I hope you guys don't think this is too boring, but I'm having a lot of fun.

I just bought 11 Buffs for .07 each with the sole intent of setting them free. My Wife pointed out that I am losing $$ LOL

NJ Bob, I remember the thread you're referring to. I think it's a great idea. You may just bring a couple new collectors into our world by doing this. When I return stateside, I may just take the same path and help out.

Perhaps you could set some free up north where they are an endangered species.

What a nice idea, except for the losing money part. I'd do it if I weren't losing money.

NJ Bob you have hit on an awesome christmas coin concept, providing a brief yet surprising tickle for an over worked minimum wage employee! KUDOS, but don't do it too long, the losing money thing.

It's Christmas time, spread the love, at least for a bit.

Great idea! You might just get a few more people interested in the hobby! You know the first thing a non collector will do, run to the computer and do some research and maybe stumble upon CCF!
who knows....we might even find a new member signing up here and asking about their newly found dateless Buffalo nickel!

I make a point of spending some in the Pepsi machine where I work. The guy who empties the change boxes out does NOT look at them. He just fills the machine with beverages, dumps the coins and heads off to his next stop. I'm guessing there's a good chance the critters are making it back out to the free range. I know for an absolute fact that a Pepsi purchased with a Buffalo nickel or two tastes WAYYY better than one purchased with current coins!!

Thanks for all the great responses.

I'm not too worried about losing money on this proposition. We're only taking about a couple of cents per coin, besides it's well worth the fun I'm having looking at people's expressions when they catch on and maybe even a bit more fun when they don't. I think of it as kind of a Christmas present to people in the neighborhood.

Sneak 'em into the coin drawer unnoticed is the goal.

The no date Buffalo nickels weren't doing me any good in a plastic tube. The people that end up finding them are going to enjoy that single, amazing, old Buffalo nickel a lot more than I could ever enjoy a bunch of them sitting in a tube, packed in a box.

I do not know how Pepsi could taste any better than it does, but I might have to test this theory!

Of course, no number of Buffalo nickels will every make Coke taste good to me.

weerdsteev, that's a good idea. I've got to try the improved taste of soda when purchased with a Buffalo nickel.
