I just got back from holiday and had a little money left over. The sensible thing to do would be to put this in the bank but there were one or two cheap items I wanted to buy. 1st was a $50 small head US green seal note (1970's to 1990's any one in decent condition just to fill a gap in my US note collection) 2nd A Byzantine Follis, Jutinian or Justin and Sophie, I want one in top notch condition but under $100 or about £70. So I hit the web...I saw 1 or 2 ebay notes that suited my budget and condition requirements but none post to UK. So I hit Vcoins to look for the follis and end up walking away with an Owl Tetradrachm! This wasnt really a cheap coin but comparitively to others of similar condition I thought it was an OK price...but by the time isurance and paypal currency conversion went on it was about my max spend. Still I am pleased I managed to get an acceptable example of this coin because to be honest I didn't think I would ever buy one of these...but hey, its my christmas present to myself!!

Thank you very much... Also I will post a holiday photo here... I managed to stumble across some Roman ruins in the town centre at Plovdiv (Bulgaria). It was orginially called Phillipopolis when Bulgaria was Thrace. I couldn't see any coins there but I know they produced them, and they used to hold provincial games when important people came to town.

Just a shame I couldnt afford one intact enough to see the square around the owl... there are several on Vcoins but they seem big money if the flan is intact with all its borders and the details are in a good state of preservation.
At 24mm though and without chop marks I doubt I could have found a much better deal than I got.
Merry Christmas all :)

Very nice Quote: Paypal currency conversion This boils my blood too, especially on ebay when you only realise the difference when you come to pay.

Yes...I really like your owl tet too! Great detail on the owl and tets from the mid-later "mass owl" period often don't show the incuse square. This is a great example of the type!

You are more likely to find the square on earlier coins. I don't have a tet to show but this obol has it.

This one doesn't seem much different to mine, but is in a better state of preservation... As you can see the square that the owl stands within is still present and the coin costs £1,300 more than mine does. I like your own Ancient ^^ he does indeed look like he aw a mouse or perhaps a baby! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pecV8i8M2J0The coin which I have purchased does not have a date or catalogue reference in the description... is anyone able to supply me those details?

Welcome to the owl club. What a lovely first owl. Having one without any test cuts or bankers marks is great. Having a full crest on the helmet and the incuse square makes them expensive. I have accepted test cuts and marks on my older tets:- I managed to get an early transitional type without any cuts:- My later profile type isn't so nice but it is difficult to find really nice ones in my price range. My Egyptian imitative also has a test cut but I can live with it. I don't have any of the smaller denominations yet or any of the other imitative types but I live in hope. Regards, Martin
