I considering the purchase of this Constanius II / fallen horseman for $55.00. I have been wanting one for a while and after reading Doug's article I have wanted one even more. Great FH article Doug! I like the details and how well centered it is. Good value?

Looks lovely and a clear barbarian - but for the money, I think you can get something nicer - cleaner fields, better Barby.
Also - you've read doug's page - make sure you get the right kind of barbarian for you! Pick out a good one.
Just noticed the details on your soldier - very nice - facial expression is clear. I'm undecided. If you like it - go for it - but Id probably get a different kind of Barbarian.

It's a nice looking coin, but the prices is too much.

$55 is a lot for a "Fallen Horseman" type, since it is up there in the list of the most commonly found Roman coin. But I find those from the mint of Antioch (Mint mark AN...) or Alexandria (Mint mark ALE...) to be of better quality than the others, even of a better alloy. The reverse depiction of the Roman soldier and the fallen horseman is often more detailed, even showing the ornate clothing. Having said that, I find those from the Rome mint to be good also.

Too much for such a common coin. I have several Constantius II I paid between $7 and $20 just in the past couple of years. After reading Doug's work on the FH types, you know there are different types from the different mints. Some better than others and some with more detail. This one of mine from the Siscia mint cost less than $20 about a year ago:

$55 is a lot for a common LRB. however, this is one of the nicest LRB's I have seen!, and suitable for display in a museum. and $55 is not TOO too much for a LRB in this state of preservation. It IS over priced, but not very excessively so.
Just re visit the U.S. coin market for any piece in superior condition, look at the prices there!

Large size like this brings more. Nice strikes like this bring more. The only reason this is not a $55 coin is the roughness at obverse left. I'm not a fan of Constantinople mint but this is better than many of theirs as well.

Great looking falling horseman coin but at a price more then twice then I have ever paid for this type. If it makes you happy then thats what counts and you learn from experiences. I always look around and sometime it takes a long time for me to find a certain coin. I can spend all day in a coin shop looking for US coins with my jewelers loupe.nice coin
