I agree, the coin looks suspect. Look at the "E" in "WE" in the motto. It's wrong. The US Mint "E" is straight along the left side. Yours is not. In fact, all the lettering on both sides is too thin and not blocky like the original shown. The chances for your coin to be genuine fades pretty quickly when put next to the one posted for comparison. I'm sorry.

Thankfully I didn't pay too much for it. I make the assumption anymore that ANY key coin is fake, so I don't pay much for them, instead I take down the seller's info, and make plans to send it in. If it ends up real I'll mail em a check as a bonus.
I think I'll send it to NGC anyways, I've got about a dozen other ones I'd like to get graded anyway.

I put it up against my PCGS 1928 and other than condition the coins are identical and the WE's are the exact same. I specialize in Peace dollars and I give it a XF.40 grade. It's a good example of an uncleaned coin and should stay that way.

Looks OK to me EF type grade. Very curious to see if this one is genuine. If counterfeit, it is a good one ...

If this is a fake it is a very scary good one ... I can not conclusively call it counterfeit based on what I am seeing. I note what has been mentioned about "WE" ... I'm not convinced that the OP coin ... given some wear and banging around ... exhibits any definitive signs of a counterfeit. Sharing a photo of my genuine example ... PCGS MS64/CAC. If pushed for an opinion ... I'm going genuine XF on this coin. David

Looks counterfeit to me. I can do some checking later tonight and get back to you. This coin has some red flags. First thing that jumped out to me was the date.

specific gravity test weigh the coin on a gram scale to the nearest .00 then weigh the coin suspended in distilled water and divide air wt/water wt. ....if the coin is authentic it will have the specific gravity of silver (90%)close to 10.33 (ex: 26 gr/2.74=10.22) white metal, cast iron, tin and zinc are around 7 nickel silver, copper and electra are around 8 and lead is around 11.30 weigh and measure 26.7 grams and 38 mm diameter ping test...set coin on edge on hard surface...drop and listen for distinctive 'SILVER PING' magnet test....70% of conterfeits are made with magnetic metals (iron ferrite base, steel, or nickel) visually check the reeding on edge of coin for flaws...compare to authentic examples GOOD LUCK!

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the coin versus a genuine PCGS AU55. While the OP's coin certainly could be genuine, and deserves professional authentication, the "2" & "8" in the date look odd. Also the "B" in LIBERTY is intersected by the spike somewhat differently than the genuine piece. I'll let you guys view the images and see what you think. This is a $300 coin if genuine; well worth someone making dies and striking counterfeits out of 90% silver. If it is counterfeit, it is a very good one!

The bottom stroke of the "R" is missing a serif (in liberty). Interesting thread due to the quality of the coin overall.

Great side by side photos for comparison BH1964! Both of the letter "S" in states look incomplete on the top serif.

Just love the diversity of opinions, any wonder why dealers and TPGs sometimes get it wrong ( even though they are professionals, and take our money to get it right ) You should start a poll and we can revisit this thread when you get it back from the TPG. Like the 1909 s vdb found in a bag search, that was finally authenticated last week.

Its fascinating! The side by side photos are great and I have tried to study their details and my poll hypothesis would be it is real. Or one very impressively scary good fake (at least for the vast majority of untrained eyes).
