Determining Strike Quality - Coin Community Forum

johnny676767 Pillar of the Community United States 522 Posts	Posted 12/23/2012 10:46 am One of the things I have learned about on this forum (thanks everyone) is strike quality. However, being new, I find this a very difficult thing to judge. I think I have been able to establish two general guidelines: 1. Read about a certain series to find out which dates were weakly struck. 2. Examine the coin's overall wear to see if certain areas exhibit unusually 'worn' patterns as this may be indicative of a weak strike and not circulation wear. D0ubl3Eagle Pillar of the Community United States 5854 Posts	Posted 12/23/2012 8:41 pm If you come across a coin with lots of mint luster but missing lots of details, you are probably looking a coin with a weak strike. For example a coin with full luster but has the details of a VF. Report this Post to the Staff
Gyrene7483 Pillar of the Community United States 1704 Posts	Posted 12/24/2012 03:18 am Take a look at some uncirculated Standing Liberty quarters and you can see how poorly struck most of them are. The head, left edge and the center of the shield are notoriously flat and without detail. The body of the eagle on the reverse is typically without feather detail.
