Unfortunately, yes, Steve is banned..
Thanks Anoob.
I've seen Denarius, Drachm and Karshapana as the name of this type of coinage...

Okay... so when exactly does it end? 5am Fri, 5pm Fri, 5am Sat? (GMT of course - had to render the possible times in an unambigious way.) I'm asking because I'm likely to be very short on time either way... but if it's 5am Fri I have pretty much no way to buy the coin in time, if 5pm there's a decent chance but I would have to hurry, and if 5am Sat then I'm still very likely to be a little short but at least I'd have the highest chance (make it a few hours more and I'd certainly succeed - the market I'm supposed to buy the coin at is fairly certain to be open at the time that corresponds to 6am Saturday, so by 8am [3am forum time] I could easily buy the coin and post the photo - but as it is I'm basically hoping it would be open this Friday because it's a holiday).

Jan - it ends 12 midnight on friday EST which is the forum standard time.
Converted, it means that, in terms of GMT, it would correspond to 5am Saturday morning. If you need extra time, I'm sure no one would object - I doubt anyone would vote between midnight and 8am EST so it would be easy to extend until then (making it 1pm GMT).

I looked over my records and can't remotely say which coin was my first. It was a long time ago and I was abroad and picked groups from unattributed-coin boxes. At the time I knew next to nothing about ancient coins. Many I picked were Byzantine bronze (they were cheap for the size), some late Roman bronze (they were simply cheap), and a few Parthian, Roman Egypt, etc. I bought quite a number of coins, most of which have long since been upgraded and passed along. A few turned out to be really good deals, but most were not good deals and not good coins either. When I got back home I started keeping good records. I have really enjoyed being able to note when, from whom, and for how much, I bought each coin. In addition to my written records, on the coin flips I put a coin number that incorporates the year and the coin within the year: 12.2 would be the second coin bought in year 2012. I have the dealer's name on the flip and a price code so (if I don't recall it) I can tell what I paid.

This is one of the coins I bought long ago during my first months of collecting. It was bought with a group of coins of Roman Alexandria. (The great majority of my early purchases were of far lower quality.) It is a large drachm of Trajan: Late in December I bought this Severus II follis on vcoins.

Okay. I had to rewrite all of this from start, so hopefully it'll be short Basically, my gamble of today didn't pay off... the market was not open (well the part I was interested in wasn't - I did buy a bunch of coins from the two dealers that did arrive today, but none of them were more than 200 years old, so they're of no relation to this subforum). I've received fairly certain word, however, that it will be open tomorrow (i.e. Saturday), and I will go and buy some coins (either way). At this point, this is entirely at your good will. My time zone is 4 hours ahead of GMT, or 9 hours ahead of forum time, so by midnight forum time it'll be 9am in here... and given that I'm still online now at (our) 1am, I'll probably be happily sleeping in my bed My current plans basically go like that: I wake up at 10am, leave home at 11am, arrive at the market (and buy the coin if applicable) around noon (or slightly earlier), leave the market (after buying some other coins, presumably) around 2pm (hopefully earlier), arrive at some place with an Internet connection around 3:30pm (or earlier), and if nothing serious intervenes post the photos sometime before 4:30pm... which would've been 7:30am forum time, so I'm just managing to push it before 8am as mentioned by BenByfield (post of Jan 2, 5:36pm, about half a page above). Unrelatedly: I've found my last bought non-modern of 2012, and noticed it's much smaller than I expected... so I carefully weighed it (after dusting off my 1960s two-cup scale because it was the only one around anywhere near that precise... and that's precise, not accurate - that other part took quite some ingenuity) and came up with a number about half of what it would've been if it was what I thought I was buying. Never mind; I now know what it is, it's still old (well older than 1550 - which puts it among top five oldest in my collection), and a cool thing to have either way.
