Taken from Mint's Facebook:
Only one month to go until the phase out of the penny begins! In tribute, today's cover photo is entirely composed of Canadian pennies.
Check back regularly over the next few weeks, because each day we'll be removing some of the pennies in the cover photo to reveal an exciting new collector's item from the Mint to commemorate Canada's one-cent coin.
Can you guess what the new product is? Let us know in the comments!

I'll take a shot. Well two shots. Firstly, the Mint is holding on to a large number of the last pennies minted in May (something like a million of them). I expect there has to be a final day issue similar to the first day of issue of the past (Olympic lucky loonie, Terry Fox, various quarters etc etc). But what I'm really hoping the Feb 4th coin will be is a great big fat COPPER penny of similar dimensions to the silver 5 oz issued in 2012. How great would those two coins look side by side?!

Let me guess.
Is it another over priced item that will take at least 6 month to ship?

I wrote to the mint some time ago requesting some sort of penny commemorative coins. A lot of my suggestions came to fruition. I probably wasn't the only who wrote the mint so I can't take credit for all the penny commemorative coins. But one of my ideas never came to be. I was hopping to see a gold penny. Not like the 1/25oz one, but 1:1 scale gold penny. I don't collect a lot of gold but I would like to buy one of those and I think it would be affordable for everyone. It would work out being around a 1/4oz. A nice final tribute.

I don't want to take credit for any is my point. I think its just nice that you write to the mint about your ideas and some come true. Like my idea for a gold penny or a silver penny. My recommendation was a 1oz penny. I'm happy with the 1/2 penny.

how about an exchange program, you bring in 2kg penny, RCM will exchange them for a giant 1kg penny...

I would love it if it was the large sized copper penny, but I think that it would more likely be the "last day issue" card that CC-Ottawa guessed.
Possibly a last day card that also contains a circulated 1908 large cent as well as the 2012?

So, it is one month to guess? This post will be as multi page as the post about "gold opportunity" I do not think, that the Mint will produce something unusual. My guess - 1oz Silver copper plated, or 1oz gold with doublle date. Possible set: coin + stamp or Silver penny with copper penny BTW: how to find RCM's Facebook page?
