My first impression when I saw the front of that coin, was that is was a roman-era coin. Then I saw the words "LIBERTY" and saw the date, and was disappointed!

This is a cent that has been near a welder or acetalyne torch. It has been hit numerous times with slag. The appearance of letters in the middle of the coin is just coincidence. The coin's original lettering that still shows is just because that are was not affected as badly as the rest of the coin.

This cent is just PMD. How it happened outside the mint is irrelevant. With mint errors you must explain in detail how it happened in the minting process. The first step in collecting error coins is to study the minting process. Then you will quickly rule out coins like the one in this thread.

Interesting Coin. PMD I would say. Also a keeper just for curiosity sake.
