Love those nationals coinhawkeye! Especially the red seal $5 with the columbus scene on the back. Stunning. Heres a few from where I'm from: They had a few hundred NY nationals at FUN, I'm praying some of them pop up in a future auction soon Does anyone know if these early 20th century nationals were used side by side with legal tender notes and silver certificates? So let's say you wanted to buy a horse or a bottle of booze, Would you have a combination of nationals, silver certificates and legal tenders in your pocket?

What do you do when your hometown isn't old enough to have Nationals...just get the closest city?
I love Nationals, but not having my hometown at least saves me some money

No hometown with Nationals? How about:
Town with your first name Town with your last name Town with a spouse's name Town with a child's name Town with the same name as your profession A note from each of the cities with an NFL (or MLB or MLS, etc.) team
There are many different ways to collect Nationals

Not trying to be a drag but to your suggestions lettow:
1 bank with my first name - no known reported no banks with my last name no spouse or kids yet, so maybe in the future no banks with jewelry exchange as title(wish there were though) and going by sports teams interests me very little(big cities with sports teams usually have plenty nationals available)
There are plenty of other ways to collect nationals, I just wanted to throw out the question of not having my hometown as a feeler question to see what others think about when they do not have that oppurtunity.
Personally I collect the weird and unusual named nationals as of now.

If my hometown didn't have nationals, I'd do it by state or by places I've been to before. Trying to collect some of the obscure nationals from your state should occupy you for quite awhile.

So, Bison, let me see if I get this . . .
You throw out a question looking for responses and then leave a critical reply to a response. I guess I will ignore your posts in the future if that is the kind of treatment responding to them will receive.

Is there a site for getting values on these type notes? I have found one at a pawn shop that is a Dallas Texas note. I believe they are asking like $50 for it (it is a $5 note) but that may be off a bit.

Hey lettow, I wasn't trying to be critical. I was looking for other forms of collecting Nationals without having a hometown bank that issued this series. You then gave great options, but once again my circumstance lead me to 0 chances to start. I was attempting to see if there were any other ideas to guide me in a direction to collect certain nationals and not be critical.
I currenctly just collect odd named places(im kinda odd myself) and was looking to collect a different way, just didn't know where to start. My next passion for nationals will probably be by state. I will probably have to make my own national for my hometown to satisfy this desire.

I was thinking of starting a collection of Nationals for cities I've visited throughout my life. Being a former employee of a US Army contractor, I've been to several cities throughout the US, so I would imagine that would keep me pretty busy. Although, I could imagine a few of those notes would be extremely hard to come by (Fairbanks, AK and Killeen, TX come to mind).

That first charter from Storm Lake caught me by surprise. What a great note!

Aldous, I'd imagine nationals from Fairbanks will be quite rare and expensive to get as one took the spotlight not too long ago on Heritage Auctions when it sold for well into the 6-figure range. If you are on a budget, One route is to collect nationals from readily available and relatively inexpensive ones from places like Chicago or NY or just stick to common notes in your home state. This way you can build a nice collection without having to drop down a fortune when rare nationals go on market.
