Windycity, why does the uncut sheet of four (blue seals) have the same serial numbers (76815) on them?
-and-
Whay does the red seal note s/n identified as 513 (by PCGS) different that the number in the upper right corner (A255177>)?
I must be missing something.

oih82w8, The serial number on the sheets are the same but the plate letters are different. That's how they were distinguished then. Note that plate letters are E,F,G and H.
As for the red seal, Large National Bank Note Red Seals had two serial numbers - one representing the number for the note on that back (lower left) and one representing the number of notes issued on all banks (upper right serial number.)

Windycity, absolutely beautiful nationals. Aren't uncut sheets worth more than individual notes?
the red seal is stunning on the $5 by the way!

Woodford, thanks. And yes, I believe a sheet is worth more and historically important. But, I did have someone ask to look at it to see how the margins lined up... they were considering cutting the notes if the margins might line up perfectly so they could get a PPQ65 or higher grade. To each his own.

Okay, I did some 'window-shopping' and YIKES these are pricey. So I will keep searching.
But, I could use a little help. My parents and grandparents all lived in Chicago -- plenty of banks, but I think that they banked at Tallman.. something or other.
So I did a search for Tallman and got lost for quite a while. If I could find a Tallman note that wasn't too expensive, I might just get it.
How do I find out the name of a bank from way back when?
If I started setting aside a little money now, I could probably shop for one at the World's Fair of Money in August...unless they are all too expensive. I'm interested but too chicken to make a big purchase.

I never knew these hometown bills existed and I now own 2 of them:    This bank is still going strong in the Buffalo area. I also have purchased a copy of Don Kelly's National Bank Notes 3rd edition. |

 I had no idea these existed either, let alone in the city I was born in. I just purchased my first one! Pricey, but all the same, very cool and rare. I will have to send it in for certification, more or less just to protect it and have the description of the note to show folks. Will post a photo when it arrives! |

I own a 1929 series First National Bank of Girard Kansas with the serial number of 0000012 and according the official census... only 11 are known to still exist.  |

I wish I had access to the census information so I could figure out how many possibly remain of my type. 11 remaining, pretty cool ragpicker!

Ragpicker, wouldn't it be something if the other 10 existing examples are serial numbers 1 to 10!
Always amazing to own a little piece of something from your hometown.
Unfortunately my hometown national notes are really common and there's plenty of them as far as I know.

Here is mine! If anybody can tell me the census of these I would greatly appreciate it. My hometown note has a really low charter number of 56.   Edited by EFLargeCents

According to my "National Bank Notes" 3rd Ed. by D.C. Kelly the census shows 11 Large notes and 37 small notes (like yours). There were 3976 $20 small notes printed with an average value of less than $50 shown. However this from the 3rd Ed. Printed in 1997 so your results may vary!

Thanks Jimjumper! 37 seems like a lot in the world of national banknotes. I know where one of the 11 large notes is for sale, but the price is way outside my budget.
