Afternoon, I posted earlier a 1942 South Africa penny, with no dots, which turned out to be simply a variety. But here I have two more, both with dots after the 1942, but they are clearly different. The 'wider' dot penny seems more prevalent. Is the 'close' dot penny a variety or an error? I cannot find any reference or pictures of the penny with the dot close to the word 'South' Anyone enlighten me?   |

British Commonwealth Coins by Jerome Remick lists it as a variety. It doesn't say which is more common though.
Do you have a link to where you posted about the no dot variety?

I don't specialize in these coins, but that's an interesting comparison.
Did you notice how the "close dot" version also has a significantly smaller "4" in 1942?

I did notice that, yes, and all the other 1942 coins I have are of the wide dot.
So do you think this would be considered as 3 varieties, or 2 varieties (dot and no dot) with the 'close' dot being an error/flaw?

They're definitely "die varieties", but whether they are catalogued by SA collectors is unknown to me. But I like that small "4"--I'll keep my eyes open for that one.  |

Interesting, ...
I guess this is how variations are discovered all the time, even though a coin has been in circulation for over 70 years.
I take it as a new 'die variety' is discovered/acknowledged, this then has to be updated in coin books etc? Is that not a logistical nightmare to have a new variety recognised?
