I picked this up for my type set, but what struck me was its proof like appearance. I don't think I have seen a business strike quarter quite like this. Where do you think it would grade? It has some very minor contact marks on the obverse, none on the reverse (that I could see). This was tough to photograph.

That does look proof-like. I don't think I'm qualified to give a serious opinion about the grade but I would guess it's in the high 60's.

It will make a nice addition to your set.

Is there a little bitty crack above the second S in states?

No crack above the s. Must have been something in the photo. The 98-D quarters seem to carry a giant premium in MS-66 or higher grades. I wonder if this is worth submitting to a TPG.

Looks like at least no less than MS 66 to me. A very nice coin.

From the photo, it is tough to grade. Modern proof like coins are typically graded low ms because even the smallest nicks make a difference with this type of surface. I dont think it is too uncommon to find proof like business strike quarters from this era either, but are certainly tough to find in the series as a whole, atleast from my observations. Its still a very attractive coin! Was this from a mint set?

This could have been from a mint set, but I just don't know as I bought it in a 2x2. It will sit safely in my set until I decide if I want to roll the dice and get it graded. If it does make MS-66 I'll be pretty happy.
Rest in Peace

If it looks like a Proof then it is a MS70. Or MS69 At least.

I might have someone look at it locally, and then go from there. If there is a reasonable chance it can receive a MS67 I will submit it. If they say MS66 or less, than it stays where it is. I would break even if it came back MS66 with the grading fees. I'll post it in the future if I decide to have it graded!

After taking a look at it again and getting a photo of the obverse in a different light, I don't think it will qualify for the higher grades because of the contact marks on the obverse which show up a lot worse because of the mirror like surface. The reverse is flawless. In this photo you can see the marks.

And that's ok! I will leave it in my type set and marvel at its mirror like luster. Thanks for the comments!

That's ok, if its worth keeping to you, then a grade wont make much difference anyways.
