To get around the digging rule you could try learning how to use a probe. That is just about the cleanest way to md. GL and HH

A probe? Something new to learn about...yea! More stuff to buy...double yea! (I am such a geek.)

I don't know how much good it would do because in northern IL NOTHNG can be REMOVED. Apparently every time I picked up a penny I found on the sidewalk, I was breaking the law.

However, I mostly want to dig up my backyard.

I went out today to get more nails and found a bunch. I was shocked to find brand new roofing nails already covered by a half of an inch of dirt. It's been less than a week since we got the new roof. I was amazed. I figured I would find nails hiding between the blades of frozen grass -- not already under dirt. It sort of freaked me out. We haven't had rain or snow...

This has been a good read. I just got a detector for Christmas and have had it out a few times. There's two 1800's houses on my road that I'm working up the courage to ask permission to hunt. Buddy, I found a 2007 Quarter today that was already under the grass roots by about 1/2 an inch. I was surprised by that.

Believe me, I want to go find some coins...but I'm still picking up nails.

When they tore off the old roof I think a bunch of nails ended up hiding in the branches of the evergreens. Every time we get a gust of wind there are nails again. I am worried about the ones on my neighbor's driveway.

Just two more months until spring....no more frozen ground!

The technology out there today is great, I need a new one and I'm looking at the amphibious ML ctx3030. Can "see" more than on target at a time, which is good if you hunt trashy irony sites. $2,500.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

$2,500?

You made me laugh with 'trashy irony sites' because that is where I live now. LOL

I am still cleaning up after the roofers. My husband taped a big magnet onto the end of a garden tool so I don't have to bend over to pick the nails. So...MD in one hand, magnet on the end of a pole in the other....

and it turns out I have a bunch of magnetic stones in my yard. Alas, no meteorites.
