Quote: First of all, I'm surprised no one has yet posted a 'Leopold the Hogmouth' coin. This inbred Hapsburg dynasty fouled both small and large coinage of Eastern Europe for generations. Dangit, woah, that's... woah. I've seen some scary Spanish Habsburg portraits, but man. The Special Olympics commem's got nothing on that.

Quote: The SBA Obverse may be ugly, but it has an amazing reverse. An amazing reverse, borrowed from a more amazing dollar coin.

I was wondering if anyone would post this coin triggersmob. I saw a pic of one when it was issued, and the initial cringe it gave me made a lasting impression. What a horrible thing to do to such a nice young couple - especially with Kate being so pretty in real life.

Some may not consider this as "ugly", but a nearly dead ringer for Cosmo Kramer. Maybe the "goofiest". And re Eunice Shriver. As unappeling as the portrait may be, it's hardly representative of her as a younger woman. Founder of the Special Olympics & big sister to someone w/disabilities, she became frustrated with the limited oppurtunities for athletes with limitations. Thus was born Camp Shriver, forerunner to the SO. I really hope some of these comments aren't targeting this champion of rights.

It does seem to be true that the greatest of humanitarians often fell out of the Ugly tree and hit most of the branches on the way down. And great humanitarians also tend to be commemorated in coinage! So where are those Eleanor Roosevelt and Mother Theresa medals?

One thing is for sure: the classic coins show "ugly" with talent. Our modern designers/engravers have a lot to learn.
