It almost has the look of the old California proofs (not a good thing) I doubt it is though yours looks fine.

California proofs were made by buffing the fields to a high polish then treating the devices with an acid that etched the surface, it failed on the letters usually or near the hair, almost a painted on proof look. I remember seeing some that burned dealers for tens of thousnads back in the late 80's.

see:

under whizzing.

Again, I do NOT think your's is whizzed, just brought back that look to me after seeing your coin.

Based on a comparison to pictures in the PCGS coin grading book, it could go as high as MS67 DMPL. It clearly looks less marked that the standard MS 66.

It's to nice of a coin for me to throw any guess out. My single MS Morgan turned out to be an AU. I fit better into the bottom feeder cat. I still love to dream though.

Me too, (though it would be great to see one of us CCF members get a huge score) Without better photos and putting this coin in hand no way I'd pay DMPL or 67 or even 66 money. 1880-S are so well struck and if it makes a 67 grade then this would be a date I'd believe would. Generally well struck, PL and DMPL in fairly high numbers according to Highfill's research, but any coin this nice looking I'm a bit suspect as well, puttied cheeks, hidden coin Dr. tricks, and there are some doozies! Many got through PCGS for quite awhile, though mostly gold and old Proofs.

Fingers crossed it gets a high grade.

I'm calling tomorrow, PCGS is f-cked, they are calling this coin a 92, which means Harsh cleaning or polishing, there is no sign of anything except die polishing and it's in one area, around LUR in PLURIBUS. Why would I send a coin if I Knew it was polished or whizzed, this coin has all original striations. It's DMPL for a reason, the die was cleaned up! And it took 7 days, for 5 day service.
I will send it to anyone here who knows a moderator and that I can trust
If I am wrong than I will stop collecting!

I was afraid of that, I had an inkling that it may have had a high speed polishing applied, they can be very deceptive. ie: California Prooflikes from the late 80's era of doctoring. Those slipped by graders and dealers for at least a couple years, and the less knowledgable dealers for decades. I'd love to see this coin in person. I do know a numismatist in the Rochester, NY area, near you, he is at a lot of local area shows. He is a Morgan dollar expert, and board member of the SDSC or maybe there is a CCF member near your neck of the woods, where you could meet upvat a local coin show?

I was really hoping you would show us a 67 coin!

Ok thanks Westcoin. there are flow lines towards the outside of the coin, if it was polished or whizzed these would be eliminated. the only thing I was afraid of but not really, was it not coming in DMPL.

You should contact the seller on ebay and see what they say.

Maybe they could offer a refund?

I'd still love to see really good close ups of the surface with a macro DSLR lens. Post if you can, maybe a friend that is a photographer?
