That is bizarre!

But now we're left with why are there 'R' COAs? Obviously they are not replacements.

Now waiting for someone to post that they have #11679...

Wow! What are the chances!

That would be a great question to pose to the Mint. Is it possible they made more than 20,000 coins? So technically there would be no COA numbered, 20,000.

This opens a big can of worms....

Is the Mint producing more coins than published?

Since Robert Stack is dead, I guess I'll try to contact the Mint to see what they can tell me about these mysterious R's.

You can call me Don, Don Quixote.

Year of the Rabbit replacement COAs are no different from the ones they replaced. No "R"s or any other letters with the numbers

I sent a general inquiry to the mint and received a response the next day. They replied with a personalized e-mail saying they would respond 'shortly'.

It wasn't an automated response but it was last Thursday morning and I'm still waiting. Maybe this mystery stumped them.

Well taro-chan, we have ourselves a pickle.

The Mint came back with the worst possible answer - the R denotes a replacement for a COA that was torn or damaged in some way during the printing process. The R was used "to avoid having duplicate numbered certificates".

I guess one of us has a COA that doesn't exist.

LOL. So my COA was damaged in some way and the replacement was your COA? I wonder what they will do when we both show up at the Mint with these 2 coins. =)

I've just read this thread about CC and TC's COA's for the Tall Ships 2005 coin in which CC has #10560R and TC has 10560.

CC received a very strange answer from the mint to his inquiry about the "R" on his COA. Supposedly it's a replacement for a damaged one. But TC has the "original" one still intact. I find this a very unsatisfactory explanation.

I wasn't a member here back in January and didn't see this, so I'm wondering if anyone ever found an explanation for this that makes sense.

Of course it is possible that it's just another example of the mysterious ways of a Crown Corporation...

Maybe someone lost their coa and RCM replaced it with a random number +R?

They probably figured what are the chances the two would find each other. (1/20,00 I guess)

Honestly, I don't think we will ever get a reply from the Mint about this. It's just one of the many mistakes that happen
