I found some English 1 pound coins where when you line the letters on the reading up the coins obverse/reverse don't line up.

The 't' is where the cross lines up on the coins in the pile.
1 and 2 have the same reverse and 3,4,5 have the same reverse.
when the reading lines up 1 shows obverse and 2 shows reverse.
3 shows obverse and 4,5 show reverse.

The lettering is also different.

Is it usual for this to happen on 1 pound coins?

They're probably fake. I remember an excellent website showing all the fakes, but I can't find the link - can anyone help me out?

these are not fakes - just normal £1 coins.

Not sure if the mint strikes the edge before or after the main coin, but the end result is that edge lettering starts at a random point, and can be either way up.

Unless they're uncirculated the £1 coin is a butt ugly coin IMO, they tend to lose clarity of detail so easily - granted that they are heavily in use!

Yeah I have noticed that 1985 one pound coins are the worst in terms of losing detail and looking worn .....
