It's not really sold out, until the dealers are sold out. Just because the mint is sold out it doesn't mean that much.

Yes and no. The mint is controller of the price so to say. In essence they are the prime retailer and can not raise their price. If mint has product it prevents all other retailers from raising prices and keep ebay prices in line. You can always buy at issue price from the mint. Once they are sold out, there are no price controls on their products and free market pricing takes over.

How come some retailers have already raised the price on Dino? This rumor that dealers can't raise the price until the mint is sold out is bogus.

You are misunderstand me. I didn't say they can't raise the price. My point is they are limited to how much they can raise the price. If all the retailer started marking up hot product 100% or 200% and the mint still had stock, they sell very few or no coins. If on the other had the mint sells out and your only avenue for purchasing coins is ebay or a retailer the price can go up to what ever the market will bare. By limiting sales and reducing the quantity of coins they sell they are effectively creating artificial demand since the Mint has always been held as our gold standard for the retail of Canadian coins.

Not my gold standard, if you add up all the dealers, they get way more stock then RCM. I do get your point.

Are you saying that the Mint sell less than 50% of their products directly to their non-dealer customers? If so, do you have a source of that information?

So my guess is that the limits for dealers are extremely high (probably more than 1,000 rolls each).

Having followed C/A that past few days and it seems like they had 100+100+300. They are getting low again so maybe they'll add to that. Dealers get offered allocations based on their prior purchases from the Mint - large dealers get more than smaller dealers. No way the average is 1000 per on a 20k mintage...there would be virtually nothing left for the mint to sell.

GW has the dino for $28 and some change. With shipping to the US of $12, it would have been around $2 cheaper per coin there than the mint. Dang!

The effect is not instantaneous. Prices have to raise naturally based on demand. You will see a change soon. It`s not like these retailers have someone constantly updating the mint website and yelling out; "They sold out, jack up the prices".

Yes, I believe not only us but most coin dealers are expecting sold out from RCM. Big dealers can only raise their prices after it. In order to achieve it ASAP, I know some dealers may even place big orders to kill the remainder. That's not a secret and it's absolutely a market decision.

There is an authorized RCM dealer (listed on mint.ca) that has has these listed at $24.99 all week. Please explain. Are you suggesting that the mint has rules for 'large' dealers that don't apply to all dealers?

BTW, my CC has been preauthorized for the penny roll. Perhaps they will be shipped over the weekend.
