Ok if gold, silver aren't safe havens, why are people still buying them. I am sure the preppers aren't the only buyers. Also how does inflation play into this I'm thinking of people who bought in the $30 an oz. I find the discussion fascinating and I am hoping to learn more. I buy the occasional piece for design mainly.

Currently Canucks are going mad for the privy maples, I have my doubts that a buck can be made on them. I know people buying by a monster box still.

@pocket change 50,

PM Junkies. They crave for it like all other addicts.

The others like myself just needed a small fix once in a while.

@pocketchange50

People might be buying them, but it doesn't mean that group of people have the ability or inside knowledge of what really is going on in the markets. Clearly everyone who has bought monster boxes of silver as the price of silver has dropped is in a big hole so being underwater should be a clear sign that those who are buying are not on the right track.

In the markets, when it gets into trading, there is only one thing that is followed, and its price action. Price never lies and it is the only way to know where the market's money is going, after all, its not what they say but what they actually, as the old saying says.

So sure the US Mint could be selling out of its silver american eagles but despite that, prices have continued to slide, lower and lower each time.

Why could help silver and gold go higher, I have no clue. I mainly only focus on price action and generally, assets at yearly highs keep hitting yearly highs until things change and the same with assets at yearly lows, they keep going lower until things change.

I am not trained as an economist, who anyways are most of the time wrong, but it doesn't appear we are in an inflationary period. I would venture a guess that we are probably in deflation, in fact we probably have been deflating for several years now and now its starting to catch up in terms of the general public taking notice. If we are in deflation, it would appear silver and gold will also go further down the pipes, along with all other commodities. In fact, the few remaining commodities finally gave it up this year, such as Cocoa, which was doing very well, at yearly highs, in an uptrend and it finally rolled over.

Again, I really have no clue why, I just interest myself in following trends, allowing them to run their course and not jump to conclusions. AFter all, I get paid by holding and patiently waiting when the trend appears. by the time I know the real reason why something has either gone higher or lower, the real money has already been made.

PC50: There's still many good reasons why some people buy gold and silver that have nothing to do with investment purposes...

1) Save money on foreign exchange. .. Depending on how long you're going away for and how much you need and where you buy and sell from you can actually save money by buying gold at one place and selling it for the local currency when you get there.
2) Fantastic way to shelter monies. Gold, diamonds and jewelry are fantastic ways to move, transfer and shelter money without a paper trail.

As for the SML's with privy marks... I wouldn't touch those with another person's 10 foot pole.. if you're going into commodities which is all those are.. stick to the ones with the smallest premiums..

Will physical gold and silver even be available to buy when it becomes devastatingly clear in 2016 - 2017 that we need it as insurance and as a store of value to protect from devaluing fiat currencies?

I understand trying to buy gold and silver at the bottom or near the bottom. But! Nobody really knows if they will be able to buy it if and when it gets there. Wouldn't it be a good idea to get some now? I'm not talking about spending everything you have on it now, but a percentage just to have it.

I remember when silver was at $40 an oz and I could ALWAYS find sellers .... silver is and will always be a very abundant resource.... going out and getting some now in fear that the supply will run out...isn't a great reason in my opinion... The Hunt Brothers tried to make that very scenario happen.. and it back fired miserably on them...In my opinion if we as a society are at the point where there's no silver available... you're probably wishing you had lead and brass anyways!

@AgCoinAu,

It is possible that most people buying silver and gold are also buying lead and brass. My point is unless anyone has a Crystal ball buying silver and gold now is not the worst idea.

I dont like buying declining assets, and even less if I have no clue what makes it a true deal or bargain.

Drilling down, I think buying a roll of silver coins, like some a roll of eagles, is even right now a waste of good money because they continue to go lower.

I could see someone buying a few pieces of silver here or there right now, but more than that is just tossing good money away. One will have better buying power by waiting. But that is just me. I prefer to let trends run their course, set areas where to book profits, rather than just sell and buy because I "think" it looks like a good spot to take action.

when gold was rising, I was buying as it broke key areas in price or made yearly highs. I bought at 400s, 500s, even 700s and then after I had accumulated, I stopped buying and sold out at mid 1200s. Trading, I was going all the way into the 1900s where it finally died out, where it stopped me out and from there clues were coming that the downtrend was starting to take over.

I realize everyone has been trained to buy "deals" but when it comes to financial assets that becomes tricky. Commodities are even harder since there is no book value, there is no divy paid out.... its really about supply and demand. Thats it. and important value investors really dont dig into commodities.

Ok time to update this.

2015 was a year to forget as many assets were locked in a range bound market, going nowhere. Others continued and remain in their respective downtrends, such as commodities. Gold and silver were no different in this aspect.

Before I get into this update, let me again repeat myself on several things I hold to be true and regarding the use of charts.

1- I am a trend following trader. I have a longer time frame than a few days or weeks. I am interested in the bigger picture and time frame.

2- Charts do NOT tell us the future. They are only a record of where PRICE has been at. They do not tell us where we are going, they do not tell the future.

3- I do not care about the "how" or "why". All that information is irrelevant to me. Those things will be found out or come to light later on and they usually happen AFTER the important move in price has started.

4- I follow a very simple process. I buy either yearly highs or break of trend lines in price OR sell short break of trend lines or yearly lows.

5- I will be WRONG on my opinions. I will be WRONG often more than right even when following my process. Why? Because there is always a level of uncertainty in markets and the best I can do is work off patterns in price I know and that fit my method.

6- Managing RISK is more important than being right to me.

7- Markets and trading are about trying to line up as many probabilities on ones side and then having an exit point in case things do not work out or exacting profits at a certain point.

Now that we have those things out of the way, let us get into the first charts of 2016. As many of you know, I prefer to keep my charts super clean. I like LESS on them and to keep things simple.

When I last looked at some charts and posted them was in October 2015. First we will look at where silver stands now.

You might recall that last year we had a few promising breaks in upward price action where gold and silver appeared to be moving higher and holding their moves. This lasted for a few weeks and then in November of last year, silver and gold went straight down for several weeks.

Within this plunge in prices, silver and gold hit and made fresh yearly lows, also commonly known as 52 lows. From there tho, instead of continuing to push lower, silver and gold began a nauseating pattern of coming close to yearly lows and bouncing, remaining choppy and going sideways. The years lows for silver stand at 13.62 and that occurred on 12/14/15.

Since then we have watched silver chop around in a range. Let us look at this together in the chart below.

What-Happens-To-Gold-And-Silver-Next?-Look-Out-Below?

Please look at first the white arrow. That is the yearly low for silver, 13.62 which happened on 12/14/15. That is an important point as that makes the low of the year, if that area gets breached, in time, lower prices are an increased probability.

Notice tho, the range we have as marked by the two aqua lines. This range has been ongoing since mid November of last year and if we look at how silver closed today, it appears to be moving OUT of this range, upward. In shorter time frames, this is the start of a break out to the upside by silver.

How far we go, that is up to the market. Sometimes bigger important moves start with little baby steps. There is going to be plenty of overhead supply, expressed by price, not physical silver, that will hold back how far this this moves. That should be expected.

The coming weeks will tell us more. So keep an eye how silver progresses from here, we are seeing again, a break out happening to the upside. Now time is needed to see how far it goes and whether this is the start of something bigger.

Remember, we have seen PLENTY of moves like this, a counter trend move, which then later fizzles out and we later see silver retesting yearly lows. So again, temper the break out with some skepticism. Allow price to confirm everything along with the element of time.

Now lets look at gold.

What-Happens-To-Gold-And-Silver-Next?-Look-Out-Below?

Pretty much the same price action. Two very definable ranges. Notice the white arrow, which is the yearly low for gold, hit on 12/3/15 which was 1045. Since then, gold has been trying to move higher and today saw it break, again, on a shorter time frame, out of its range.

Everything we said about silver applies to gold. There will be plenty of overhead supply to begin with. Therefore, more time is needed to see if this move holds. As the days and weeks go by, we will get more clues as to whether this move holds up and if gold can build on it.

So the key points from this update are-

1- We have a break out, in a shorter time frame, for gold and silver.

2- As always, more time is needed to see if this holds.

3- There will be and it should be expected, some sort of selling. This is not to say buyers cannot push this up but it will take a lot of buying to push from here.

4- We have seen countless times gold and silver break out and then fizzle out.

5- The element of TIME will allow us to see how far and how strong the buying/selling is.

As always keep an open mind and expect the unexpected. I will be following closely here to see if anything actionable shows up... and of course,, I want to see some resolution so that I can get back to adding coins to my somalian elephant collection lol. However, that will depend on Mr Market,,, maybe we see something happen in 2016.

I wonder if it has any effect with the coming of Chinese New Year in about 2 weeks, most wealthy consumers buys gold as gifts during this major time period. I would wait to see how the market react afterward in second week of February for myself. Of course; gold and silver may go up or down another 10 percent?

The downtrend of stock markets has a mix opinion and reaction with PM for the time being, just a thought.
