And the verdict is..... (to no one's surprise)

I went to my dealer this morning and he also thinks it's most likely a die error (I think that's what he said) or something. He did say it was roughly in the right place, right size, the dot was raised, but that all four of the '36 dots have already been accounted for and the likelihood of this being a real dot was slim. It was just a shame that the obverse had so much damage and corrosion on it. Nevertheless, he told me that it was a great find and a neat coin to have, especially considering it came from circulation. Who knows, maybe in a few years it might be worth $5 to a buyer who wants a dot '36 penny, just not the dot '36 cent.

I shall lovingly place it into a flip into my album and dub it "the dud dot almost real dot cent".

Thanks all for your opinions. It was a nice few days imagining the what ifs. And, it's been my most exciting circulation find thus far (other than some early US wheat pennies).

Well, no matter what, it's still a 1936 dot penny. It is a 1936 penny and it has a dot under the date...

How about sending it my way. It would look much better in my album...but seriously, if it was mine, I'd be spending a lot more time researching it, rather than rely on a coin dealer who uses the term "probibly".

cheers

Gary - I've considered sending it to be graded. But given that all of the 36 dot pennies have been accounted for, I very much doubt that anybody would proclaim the penny to be anything other than a variation. History of the coins suggests a very conservative view of what this penny might possibly be. Even if it were an unknown, unaccounted for legitimate 36 dot penny, the likelihood of anybody stating with any measure of certainty that it is, is slim to none.

Well if you ever decide to sell, I'd love to be in on the bidding.

I'll keep it in mind. Though, I suspect I won't ever sell this coin. It's already in my album and I do like looking at it from time to time and dream of the possibilities...
