i am considering picking up an au58 1912 $5, NOT from the hoard. I am looking at about $550-$650 total. Bullion on this coin I believe is around $400 at the moment.
I love the coin, it's got fantastic eye appeal, and I can afford it. I typically lean towards beautiful pieces that also have equivalent investment value. I consider my coin collection to be roughly 50% hobby, 50% illustrated investment portfolio.
I suppose my question is, will this appreciate in a similar ratio as a straight bullion 1/4 ounce would? IE, if gold goes up 10% this year, can I expect my Au58 to go up 10% as well, or just the flat bullion value increase?
I am relatively new to graded coins, so pardon my ignorance.

better to get a MS coin, I think MS is not that much higher price than an AU-58 coin.

I agree with others... get at least mint-state. Not AU. It won't be very much extra.

I would try to get an MS coin but if you can't find one for the right price, then try to talk the guy down who has this one.

I got an MS 1913 $10 about 5 years ago. I had it verified against known published fakes. A coin dealer buddy of mine of 35 years professional experience checked it for me.
Be beware of this series in particular. There has been some extremely good fakes of these made of all dates, from recycled U.S. gold coins.
Same applies with most dates of U.S. gold coins.

the NCLT forum is probably not the best place to ask try the Canadian coins or grading forums

Unfortunately graded coins do not reflect the activity of the bullion market, unless there is a big swing in PM prices. If the price of gold rises 10% it will mean a 10% rise in the intrinsic value of the coin but, not the numismatic or overall value of the coin.

with the recent knowledge of someone having 1600 gold coins graded by pcgs already with most of the coins at ms 63 or better, anything below ms 63 will only become bullion value

I see I have a 1914 hand picked $5 one I've been wanting to send it for grading but I don't want them to brake the holographic seal what do you think? Worth it or not worth it?

take it to jm or a local large dealer ask for a grade opinion, if everone agrees its below ms 63 no need to grade, if above 63 probablly worth it send it out.
