Decent theory other than there was limits put on the first glass coin. Initially there wasn't but soon after the release they implemented a limit of 1.
I had ordered 2 ladybugs and when I checked my status it said limit of 1. I called the mint to confirm I was still getting 2 and they said because I ordered before the limit was put on they'd honor it.

Quote: They should start out the series with mintage 5000 to guarantee the success of the series I don't understand how limiting the mintage on the first coin will help promote the entire series. Also how does this help the mint by eliminating $400,000 in sales. The coin is already almost sold out. In my opinion If you want a series to be a success, don't put out coins people don't want and don't have a new series every month. I'm not saying this coin sucks, I will reserve that judgment until I see it, but I'm also not buying into this series. I've got far to much money tied up in other series to justify a new one.

If the mint put the mintage at 5000, the coin will be sold out in no time. This creates interest. People wanted to know more about a sold out coin which by itself is self marketing. This paves way for the future success of the series in my opinion. Almost sold out is still not a sold out and since its not sold out, people take time to consider the coin, rethink about buying it, lets see if the coin goes to awaiting stock before commiting. If it is a single coin release, I think high mintage is fine, for a series, you want to release with a bang.

@Coin Chick: Thanks for clarifying... I wasn't into collecting coins when that one came out, so I just assumed that the limits were introduced for the 2nd in the series. In any case, I still think that my theory still holds.

It creates interest, and loads of angry people when it doesn't get out of MC.

Some people around the world only collect coins with 5000 mintage or less. For great coins the mint can set a strict limit and they'll still sell out. I just don't see this thing doing anything close to the ladybug. But I'm not saying it won't be a hit, it could double in price and that would be great, or it might flop.

How do you find/see that 935 left for sale?

Type 936 in your cart, it won't let you. Just work your way backwards.

I have 1 on order and 6 on hold pending the outcome. Either way, I'll keep the hold until I see one in person.

91% of mintage sold, I'd say that's pretty good for a coin that's been delayed until April/June
I grabbed a few myself. ;)

I agree with the 5000 part in term of collect ability and exclusivity. But does a coin need to sell out to be a hit? Since is a coin measured by its sales success with the first week of sales? I remember when coins took weeks to sell out. I think the problem with this coin is that its misunderstood. Its been done before, a hologram coin and a painted coin are not new. This coin can only achieve greatness buy it's personal appeal, how it looks in hand. As I mentioned before I'm not buying this coin, the photo does nothing for me. I wish the mint released a video on this coin and put it on youtube.

This one could be similar to the birds of canada series where it may take a bit of time for word to get out to the odonata, entomology & naturalists communities. The Dragonfly Society of the Americas is having its 2013 Annual Meeting in Saskatchewan this July. Who knew... & there is even a British Dragonfly Society and a Worldwide Dragonfly Association. This coin could do well in the secondary market over time...

It definitely could do great, it's just not a sure thing like the ladybug or penny sets. I'll be watching it closely that's for sure.
