If it was found near to the surface by Metal Detecting, it may have been lost by an Antiquarian.
We know of "Byzantine" (East Roman) trade going on with some western parts of Britannia, such as Cornwall and the Wirral, from around the 6th century, but it is unlikely that trade continued to the same extent in the reign of John II.
Anyhow, the surface of it looks like it has been overcleaned.
