I have a 198? nickel that I found years ago that had this circular swirl type damage to its face and a thick edge that I always wondered how it got that way!! Another mystery solved!! Great post!

I am glad to see something I was able to contribute gets used even a couple years later. This forum is a place of giving people and I am glad I have been able in some small way to contribute.
Coop, if you read this and want to, feel free to alter any of my pics that you might want to the coop-format we have all come to know and admire.

From the pictures you posted, this does not look like dryer damage to me. As the coin tubles in the drum of the dryer (or washer), there would be no way to insure only one side became very worn. Your REV is worn down, but the OBV is not.
Also, for that much wear on the REV face, the rim would have been made thicker by the time that much detail was lost.
I have no idea what kind of damage your coin is showing.

G'day Earle42,
I get asked about these all the time and would love to be able to use your picture of all the coins and diagram of the dryer as illustrations. Are you able to put your Monika on those so they are attributed to you?
Or if you can't edit, perhaps you can post new pictures here with the images updated "Images Courtesy of Xxxxx"
Thanks

@Michael When I posted these, basically I was just releasing them to the public domain. So you can use them for anything you wish. I appreciate your asking though. The only thing I would ask is that when you share them, you make sure to keep the same level of scientific accuracy on these by stating this is the theory we have. Yes, as person with a lot of first-hand experience with these, I believe the theory probably is correct. But my grandfather and I never actually watched them being made. I know...it seems a bit nit picky. But the world of fudged pseudoscience is so largely pushed as fact nowadays that it really irks those of us who taught science from a basis of pure, verifiable, observational, repeatable fact. The definition of "science" demands the mentioned standards. If ever you need a specific reference, just link it to the CCF page these are on. Don't be afraid to PM me if you feel there needs to be more, really desire more, or just want to discuss (anything ).
