There is no possible way to guarantee that the ticket total is always going to come out to round up.

For single items you could assure it, but fair point about multiple items.

Right, with $5.20, you give me $5.25, I give you a dime; net sale is $5.15. I am okay with that. Your customers are going to love me.

I do think there are some stores that would do that. But what happens if the store owner doesn't want to give a dime and the customer doesn't want to give the store an extra nickel? As petty as it sounds that would happen at least some of the time.

A return to the Half Dime could solve some of the cost issue, of course theyre so small I would probably lose every single one that I got

Glad you see that.

When dealing with totals, it is very easy to have the software round up, down, or to the nearest denomination. If you were going to be a jerk, that would be way to do it, but it would always be obvious to the customer what you did.

If rule number one is, "Take care of your customers, or someone else will" then rule number two is "The customer is always right."

You give them the dime. Now you have a happy customer who will likely return.

If you do not like it, then you can ask them to never return. However, I would advise against it. Customers like to talk.

You are right, there will be jerks who will do what they can to shift the burden to or take advantage of the customer. But they are the exception, not the rule. Most businesses would adapt just fine and keep happy customers in the process.
