D0ubl3Eagle Pillar of the Community United States 5854 Posts	Posted 03/11/2013 9:58 pm I know one wouldn't typically expect an 1892 dime to be faked but something just doesn't feel right. This issue typically comes sharp and some of the details like the wreath look mushy. The surfaces on the reverse looks rough and pimpled and sort of has a cast look to it. D Pillar of the Community Canada 899 Posts	Posted 03/11/2013 11:02 pm With coin in hand I have to agree 100% that it just doesn't look right especially the details which are weak in areas. The size is right at 17.9mm and the weight is 2.4 grams which is .1 grams off (could be my scale) The coin is more silver in color with some luster. The top of the first S in States is filled in (picture attached).. I'm not sure why anyone would make fake 1892 dimes as this is not a high value coin..Just another strange one to be solved.. SteveCaruso Pillar of the Community United States 1796 Posts	Posted 03/12/2013 12:05 pm This coin is very unlikely to be genuine. Weak details like that are not caused by corrosion and polishing, even over several iterations. The biggest tipoff other than Liberty's head falling into the field and the roughness on the reverse, is the odd "flatting" on the denticles and the devices close to the rims while the rims, themselves, are very strong. My guess is that it's a contemporary counterfeit. Back in 1892 a dime was worth about $2.50 in modern money. Edited by SteveCaruso 03/12/2013 12:06 pm Report this Post to the Staff
