Cleaning Coins - Coin Community Forum

Jayson Valued Member Canada 55 Posts	Posted 03/14/2013 02:07 am Hello, I'm sort of a novice when it comes to cleaning ancient and crusty coins. So a while back I decided to try my hand at it. These photos show my progress from the day I first received them to today. My method has just been olive oil and a tooth brush with dish detergent and distilled water between changing oil. As you can see from the dates on the pictures I at first did this at somewhat regular intervals, but for nearly a year I've just left it. Some coins I don't think will reveal more detail, though dirt never ceases to rub off. Some coins I think may be a bit melted or corroded beyond recognition, though it may just be a stubborn layer of dirt. Should I continue the olive oil treatment? It's been difficult for me to decide when to stop cleaning or how to tell when I should stop, so it's great to hear your thoughts on it. I think I will stop now and move on to the more onerous task of trying to ID these coins. Though, as I said, some are simply beyond recognition. I expect a lot of eyestrain.
