The only hype I hear about this coin is how much you can flip it for. I don't see any long term value in these coins. I see future collectors making fun of these coins like a bad haircut in a certain era. ie. 80's hair, emo hair, rat tails and mullets.

I think if they made 20,000 coins this release would have been a flop.

If they made 20,000 then twice as many people could have one. How is that a flop?

If something requires artificial scarcity to be considered interesting, how interesting is it?

I couldn't agree more! Personally, this series leaves me cold. If you like flowers & insects and/or find them interesting (as I do), why not simply buy the 25 cent coins that parallel this series? What do people find attractive about lumps of glass glued on coins? OK, the ladybug wasn't bad, and the bumblebee wasn't ugly, but the butterfly is *really* ugly! I prefer the realistic images of the 25 cent coins to these glass blobs that look like they were made in a Grade 5 arts & crafts class. But that's just me.

I would hardly call that "coin collecting" in the purest sense of the word... there are more posts about seeing ones initial investment rise and/or flipping a quick sale for profit, than there are posts about the coin itself. Now, it is no longer numismatics, it is just plain supply and demand economics...

Sadly, I have to agree. This trend largely explains the steady increase in traffic on CCF/NCLT forum over the past 12 months.

Regarding the OP, I can understand the frustration. I doubt that the comment will show up on the RCM web site, but at least we can debate it here on CCF, while are still allowed to voice our opinions (sans the coin's image of course...)

I just read the 4 pages, and it just makes laugh.
It's not just a blob of glass, it's actually a blob of hand crafted Venetian glass made in murano Italy. Each (blob) is a one of a kind work of art.
Why would people say canadapost shouldn't get any, does that go for the hundreds of dealers around the world to.
I've learned 1 thing in this hobby, people want what they can't have.

As for calling into question the quality of the art, this is a fifth graders butterfly:

My-Review-At-RCM-For-Purple-Coneflower-With-Venetian-Glass

I think if a fifth grader tried to blow glad they would very quickly have no fingers left. The melting point of glass is around 1400-1600 °C. I would not recommend anybody try making their own glass butterfly coin and even if you did it would not look this good.

You have to remember to make a small butterfly like this from glass really requires a great deal of skill. They probably lost 2 x 3 times as many just to make 10,000 good ones.

I doubt it's that hard to make the glass. They're mass produced (they cranked out thousands of them).

That last point is very important as it affects the perception of how artistic it is.

Make 30000 of them. What would people think of them?

I absolutely agree with RD. It is a beautiful hand crafted from Italy.

Also why people said CP should not get any?
CP is not only a big dealer (or coin seller), but also a partner of Mint. How mint ship out their coin? Answer: Canada Post.

Any body every think all this profiteering is off putting to the new collector! After reading the Nclt forum, I don't have much respect for coin collecting, and no respect for the mint. You guys and your profits are doing more to hurt the hobby in the long run. Remember not every one has deep pockets, I'm a single parent with a teenage son. I'm not blowing my grocery budget, so some fat cat can pocket $150 and up. I guess your only a serious collector if you are rich. I have met a lot of wonderful and helpful people on ebay, but this is stomach turning. There are a handful of people here I respect their opinion. The rest I feel sorry for, if profit is the only motive. Remember not everyone follows forums, or can sit on the phone/ computer. I see people are using any excuse possible, to make themselves feel good about their gluttony. It's the Easter season, we are supposed to be considerate of our fellow man. Actually thank you, I can see what will happen in times of a food shortage. This is a piece of silver, it's true money corrupts. If this is the future of coin collecting, I'm done. I'll spend my money elsewhere!!

pocket change 50, I think your faith will be somewhat restored in the Variety Forum - there, people study all the ins and outs of coins, right down to a worn George VI cent worth only face value - you have to wade into this NCLT forum with a thick skin, because it is an entirely different world...

Devac, your comment made me chuckle.... but don't forget the most over-hyped product ever... that failed miserably...

It will be interesting to see what happens to these coins in 10 years from now...

I was able to purchase the coin, through both this forum and another I frequent. I took the RCM survey a couple nights ago. I could have answered every question favorably because "hey, I got mine, and if you didn't, sucks to be you". But I chose to address the fact that the MC product alert came well after the items was available for purchase. I chose to address this issue, although it didn't affect me, because it affects the community as a whole.

But there is a clear difference between not having the opportunity because you weren't notified, and being upset because the item is of limited availability. RCM needs to fix their email notification system. The Monday morning quarterbacking should be focused on the deficiencies in their notification system, not spamming the product review because you missed out.
