Quote: But I also collect, and as a collector, if the coin isn't rare, I don't care how good it looks, as mentioned earlier, the only items I see as worth collecting are items that are exclusive, not something that everyone has. A mintage of 10,000, 5,000 or even 1,500 - is not exclusive. At the most recent Nuphilex, a dealer had a gold an ancient coin from Greece, with less than 6 known surviving, and it was sold for $3700 - that is exclusive. Another dealer had a Charlton Pattern DC-34 (1967 bobcat 25-cent, struck in pure nickel), about 10 known, and this one was tied for the finest known for a price of $5500 in his case - again, that is exclusive. If I take your above statement to its logical conclusion, then you must also own a 1889 10-cent, and the NFLD 1873, 1873H and 1946C silver 5-cent coins. Those are pretty darned exclusive... how many of the 2006 gold-plated silver 50-cent coins that were in the 2007 RCM Mint report did you buy? Mintage was based on sales and less than 5,000 are known. The fact that you "don't care how it looks" speaks volumes that echoes my previous point - and in this case, so very few people are speaking about the coin itself. The business of selling NCLT has become a self-feeding process, and it most definitely is not numismatics... Quote: I'm sure most people collect because they feel they have a stash of stuff that others can't get.. Nope. I collect coins that once they are in my hands, I can't put down - I am a sucker for beautiful Canadian coins - that could be the cartwheel lustre, toning, the strike or the grade. I could care less if the mintage was 1 or 1 million. For example, I bought the Natural Wonders series back from the mid-late 1990s, and I bought the square coins a couple years back. I also own some beautiful, toned, proof-like 1-cent coins from the 1950s and 1960s, and a whole bunch of error coins (every one is unique) and, yes, I do own rare stuff, that others cannot get, only because I have been hunting longer and harder... but to me, my coins are worthless, because I never intend to sell them - I enjoy them too much. Do you think the owner of a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird, owns that car because no one else has one? Or do you think they collect and own that car because its history in racing or they love the beauty of that beast or old Mopar muscle cars in general?

All that being said, most people I sell coins to always ask if I think the coin is going to go up in value. I collect colored circulation coins. I don't do it because they'll be worth huge money, I do it because I like them. I also collect privy marked maples, again not because of value but because I like them.
I need to flip coins to afford collecting, if I didn't sell any coins my collection would be pitiful. I don't have a job or an education, so all I can do is sell coins to make a bit of money to help my family and my collection. Am I supposed to have sympathy for single mothers who want to collect silver coins, does anyone have sympathy for me because I only went to grade 10 and don't have job, no, that's my problem. I work hard for the coins I get, and I'm proud of them.
How come people don't talk about the money we lose when we buy coins that turn out to be flops. People don't want those coins because they can have them, they want what they can't have, very simple.

I didn't think it was harsh based on how people come on to this forum and bash others opinions, belittle people, and force their opinions onto people making them think they are at fault for the feelings they have in regards to nclt. I am primarily a collector and I was under the opinion that this forum's intent was for that as well. Some financial talk is ok. When every topic revolves around value and becomes a showboating circus it becomes tiresome sifting through the junk for the good posts. I am not aware of any other section of CCF being like this. I don't care how much money people claim to spend, and the few pennies they rake in. If these 2 sides want to coexist in one forum they need to show respect to each other. And most of the nasty comments come from people wanting to profit.

I try to exist in both worlds. It's a delicate balancing act, but I do my best. I collect coins because I like them. But also know that items that appreciate in value can be used as an opportunity to profit, and purchase other coins that I love, that wouldn't be attainable otherwise.
Let's cut to the chase: There are people who frequent the RFD forum present in this forum, and vice-versa. Many of us have our own reasons for doing what we do. Whether it's strictly collecting and appreciation for rare coins, or flipping. Regardless of where nasty comments originate, let us all remember that we each have a profit motive in this hobby. That motive could be getting that item that you have wanted since you were 10 years old, or scoring a 1000% flip on an incredibly hot coin.
Is there room in this forum for both types of people, without having to devolve into nasty comments, or banishment from where they came?
I love this forum. I love the RFD forum. They each have unique perspectives to offer on the hobby. I just hate to see the "east coast / west coast" mentality (for those of you familiar with the Biggie / Tupac feud) start to separate each other, when we have so much to learn from each other.
This is my one, and only attempt to make peace between the factions. I have noticed this undercurrent for months. Let's try to put it to bed, once and for all.

Vanguard: I don't think it ever be peace between the two separate camps. Old members (not age but been here longer) believes RFD had poisoned this forum by bringing in the flipping mentality. The new members does not seems to have the problem but the older members do feel that their forum had been taken over by a bunch of money hungry collectors/flippers.

I initially bought the ladybug coin for its uniqueness and never thought of it as an investment. I thought the coin was overpriced at $139.99 and I am shocked at the prices people are paying for the first coin. I would buy the entire series even if it didn't appreciate. I do have sympathy for those who missed out, but everyone has to realize that coin collecting is a serious business and cutthroat at times.

There's nothing wrong with flipping coins. Dealers do it all the time.
But dealers don't go blabbering all over the internet what's going to make them the most profit.

There's 4 coins already sold in April release. Seems like to me, that more & more people are trying to make a quick profit on flipping coins. There's nothing wrong with that, but it also not as easy as many new flippers would like to thing.

@elkslayer132 do you thing dealers are buying all these coins? Look how many are new coins already on E-bay. And have many headlines are saying - "Sold out" "Rare", "Low mintage". And the dealers even started selling those coins yet.

Sorry to tell you, but dealers also use ebay. Maybe we shouldn't share that kind of info here, I thought we were helping people know what the hot coins are.

So if I was a dealer getting %15 off retail and marking it up huge, it's ok. But if I work hard to get coins at issue price and then try and sell them for profit, I'm a bad flipper. I consider myself a collector first and wannabe dealer second. 😈

Everyone's buddy, Angus Coin Shop has started selling. I stumbled across a Kijiji post selling the butterfly for the low low price of $275 IIRC.
