pyrbob Rest in Peace United States 1943 Posts	Posted 03/31/2013 09:30 am A rolling fold error happens when the blanking punch is damaged. The blank punched out with this punch will have a tail or tab attached at the spot where the damage is because the metal on the blank tears away instead of being sheared off. Then when the blank goes through the upset process the tab gets pushed up. Finally when the coin is struck the attached vertical tab gets struck into the coin. Report this Post to the Staff
mikediamond Pillar of the Community United States 2745 Posts	Posted 04/03/2013 10:21 am A better, more descriptive term is "blanking burr". However, we're stuck with the terminology we inherit. Rolling folds don't come much bigger than the one you see on this cent. Rolling folds are often confused with run-of-the-mill rim burrs, struck-in metal fragments, lamination errors, Retained Cuds, and even small Cuds. There was another lot containing four alleged rolling folds offered at the same time as this one. However, only one of the four was actually a rolling fold. Error coin writer and researcher.
