I have found a number of yellow toned halves while roll searching.

1. These are not gold plated or spray painted.
2. The color in this pic is very true to the actual coin, however, the luster is much more vivid in hand.

I especially note this in yellow toning in 1977 and 1978 halves, although I have found many different dates this way over the last year. I think the most recent was a 1994.

I know toned Morgans are well researched. Does anyone know why these seem to turn yellow? Are they something collectors might want or should I ignore them (I have kept a couple of the best ones for myself just b/c they are nice looking). They almost shine like gold at the right angle.

I have found many half's that were gold or gold colored material
plated. They ranged from worn to MS.
Only way you could ease your thoughts on this is to
either cut one in half or polish or buff it down
to the original surface. It's only half a buck
so go for it. You will see that it is plated.
Inspect closely the rim edges and the high spots
on the relief first to look for the wear.

Thanks for the answer Indian.
I also have found many gold plated and gold painted halves. Some of the gold ones were plated awhile ago and the coin still was circulating to the point that the gold was wearing off in many places.

In hand this half reminds me of this pic (got it online) of a primarily yellow-toned nickel:

Some of the yellow halves have some slight rainbow coloring on them also - like the nickel.

Won't buffing/polishing also remove toning since toning is just tarnish?

I would not suggest buffing a toned coin.
Especially one that is naturally toned.
That nickel has nice toning. It's possible
that some half's could aquire toning either
naturally or by other means. Especially any silver ones.
Many factors can cause toning of any coin. As far as the golden half's, if the entire coin is evenly colored and
that includes the rim and reeding etc. then it is most likely
plated.

I appreciate your input. This piece has nothing abnormal on the sides which is another reason I believed it to be just toning. I am interested in knowing what chemical reaction makes them tone yellow. If it was simply normal from circulation, there should be a lot more of them.

Like I mentioned. That half dollar is most
likely plated not toned.
If that gold color is on the edge of the rim
as well as on the reeding itself and is pretty
evenly colored then it is plated. Wish I had kept
some from my last bank box of searched half's.
Found a nearly full roll of gold plated kennedy's.
All clad years so I just returned them back to the bank.
No added value to them other than a conversation piece etc.
